From the 16 October we’ll be making some major improvements to Tate Liverpool.

We want to create a space that excites our local friends and families, while encouraging visits to our superb city from far and wide. You can expect:

Whilst the improvements are taking place, our current building will close and from 27 October, you’ll be able to find us at Royal Institute of British Architects (@riba) North, Mann Island, a 5-minute walk from our current home.

Happy Birthday to us! 🎈🎂🎁

Tate Liverpool opened on 24 May 1988. In 1985, James Stirling was commissioned to design the gallery, which was originally called ‘Tate of the North’. The transformation turned the disused 19th century buildings on @thealbertdock into simple but elegant spaces for art.

We had a makeover in 1997/8 and 2006 and now our original site on the Dock is temporarily closed to complete an incredible refurbishment which will see more open plan spaces for art, communities and families, more magnificent views over Liverpool’s iconic Waterfront and significant improvement of environmental standards and thermal performance.

🎨 🧑🏼‍🎨 Our May half term activities start today! 📢 Be inspired by icy landscapes and arctic adventures in our free, family-friendly creative activities. Let your imagination snowball into an avalanche as you create your own arctic-inspired artworks!

''I knew once the tower was covered up, it would start to leave people’s minds. I was determined that it never be forgotten.'' - Steve McQueen

In December 2017, artist and filmmaker Steve McQueen made an artwork in response to the fire that took place earlier that year on 14 June at Grenfell Tower in North Kensington, West London. 72 people died in the tragedy. Filming the tower before it was covered with hoarding, McQueen sought to create a record.

‘Grenfell’ by Steve McQueen is now presented at @the_Bluecoat from 16 May to 21 June 2026. Booking is essential, please follow the link in our bio.

This national tour is being coordinated by Tate in collaboration with the partner venues and is made possible thanks to support using public funding by the National Lottery through Arts Council England and from Art Fund. Grenfell in Liverpool is a co-production by Tate Liverpool and the Bluecoat.
