A few months back, Erol Serbest (@erolserbest_) reached out. “I’d love to cover two days of the conference and capture one of the best conferences in Way Up North’s history.” Sold. You’re in.

It takes guts to step up like that, especially in front of a community of photographers who’ll be looking at your work afterwards. (The @pictime_us galleries are ready, by the way. We’ll share those soon.) Erol was a pro through the whole event. We want more eyes on his work.

Here’s what you might not know about him. When he saw the badges from @letterpress.is and @spreadu_designer, he spotted something we hadn’t: the whitespace on them could be used to collect signatures. So he started asking guests to sign his. As clever as he is behind a camera.

We were going to run a small contest to celebrate the badges and Erol’s instinct. Then the prizes landed and this got serious.

In 2019 we ran WUN in Cannes. The plan was to bring the show to French photographers who hadn’t been showing up to it. Translation services, a beautiful French city, the whole thing on paper looked like the obvious move. Then it happened. The event sold out, a handful of French photographers came, and the locals mostly stayed home.

That weekend’s been on our minds. Not because València is in trouble. The room will sell out. The WUN community always shows up, and València is no exception. The audience is rolling in from across Europe. The line-up is coming together. The room will be strong.

But right now, five Spanish photographers are signed up. Five. We picked València because the community asked us for Spain for years, and we listened. Locals in the room would make it the room we set out to build.

So here’s what we’re doing. We’re holding the current ticket price until May 13th at 17:00 GMT+2. A few extra days for the Spanish photography community to find out the show is happening on their doorstep.

If you know a Spanish photographer who might want a seat, send this their way. The doors are open, the room will be strong, and the only thing missing is the people who live where we’re meeting.

The Way Up North Awards began in 2017. They’ve become more competitive every year. Coming out on top isn’t simple anymore, if it ever was.

Imagen (@imagen.ai) has supported the awards nearly every year. We’re grateful for that, more than we can say in a sentence. The categories are judged by selected ambassadors. The whole thing is a real team effort between Imagen and WUN to piece together each cycle.

In Vienna, five individual categories were judged. The top three in each were known going in. The overall winner of each category was announced live on the big stage. It’s a moment in the room, and this edition came with an avalanche of emotion. If you were there, you know.

There’s a vacuum cleaner running somewhere in the empty cinema. That’s how WUN ends.

Yesterday it was three hundred people deep, every break overflowing into the foyer. Today the chairs face an empty stage.

WUN Vienna ran for two days at full volume. Every break packed. Every conversation overlapping with two more. Then it ended at five on the dot, the way it always does, and within 40 minutes the foyer became the foyer of a cinema again.

The funny thing about a theme called The Unsexy Stuff is how alive the room felt for two days about it. We came in to do an honest, useful event. The forecast said twenty-seven. The room ran hotter than that. Photographers we’d never met telling us about systems they’d built and never shared. Veterans confessing to early-career guests that they’re rebuilding too. Conversations about pricing, taxes, contracts, automation, follow-up emails. The AI tools nobody mentions on a panel but everyone runs on Monday morning. All of it had heat. People didn’t drift out. People asked us when we were doing this again.

It turns out the unsexy stuff is exactly what you want to talk about with people doing the same work as you. Once. In a room. For two days. With no one to perform for.

A thank you we don’t take lightly. The presenters delivered the work. The sponsors came to talk and stayed to listen. The guests made the room what it was.

The vacuum’s done its rounds. This cinema is empty now. Teatro Talia is waiting. We’ll see you in València.

Tickets are live. We’re closer to sold out than expected.

Sit longer than you should.

In a Viennese coffee house, that’s how it works. The waiter brings you a melange and a glass of water on a small silver tray. You pull a newspaper off its wooden pole. Watch the city walk past the window. Order another coffee. Or order a beer. It’s twenty-seven degrees out there and Vienna does beer right. The chair is yours for as long as you can sit in it. Nobody moves you on. Freud kept his usual table at Café Landtmann for the same reason.

WUN this week is the same trick. Stay in the conversation past the point you’d normally check your phone. Sit through the talk that’s asking more of you than you bargained for. Listen to the photographer whose work hasn’t landed for you yet. Order the beer.

The good stuff doesn’t show up in the first ten minutes. It shows up around the second drink, when you’ve stopped scanning the room for the next thing. The person whose work didn’t click? You’ll get it now. The conversation that felt slow? It’s about to mean something.

Sit longer than you should.
