One year today we lost one of our own.
It's a small community of creatives behind those lights, stands, and cameras and a few people very close to me had the opportunity to work with Halyna Hutchins.
She is gone far too soon.
Please let her passing be a reminder that workplace safety and strict safety measures are not a joke.
If you don't know what can keep you safe on a film set, please ask. Speak up if something looks off or concerns you, and if someone speaks up—NEVER ignore them. Unions, safety training, producers, government rules and regulations, and BLIND LUCK are not the only things that keep you safe on a film set. It's working together and keeping your eyes open for problems that gets us home to our families.
Ask questions. Be informed.
Is your producer letting you drive home after 16-18 hours on set and you can barely keep your eyes open? That's not okay. We have to look out for each other.
As a family of industry professionals we've had accidents and at least one fatality this year due to greed and unrealistic on-set scheduling.
We aren't robots.
This needs to stop.
This tragedy was preventable. The systems and safety protocols to have stopped this loss from ever even occurring existed and were not followed.
Please take a moment and remember this artist, along with Sarah Jones, both lost too soon due to EASILY AVOIDABLE on-set negligence.
Safety protocols alone don't keep you safe, the people that believe in them and implement them do.
IT'S NOT WORTH THE SHOT IF IT COSTS SOMEONE THEIR LIFE.
