Welcome back to Member Monday! Meet Janelle, she’s been working in the film industry as a professional for over a decade. She is an artist first and foremost and has a background in fashion, historical costume making and bespoke tailoring. She loves building characters and the beauty of a collaborative vision coming together. She’s extremely resourceful and has a knack for creative problem-solving. Her path to costuming was a deliberate pivot — after a decade in administrative roles in architecture and banking, she returned to school for a Fashion Design diploma from George Brown College and a Fibre Arts certificate from Fleming College.

In film, she has worked as an on-set costume assistant, buyer, office assistant, set supervisor, and sewer, with a particular love for roles that marry her administrative background with her passion for textiles. She has also taught crochet, sewing, fashion history, and fabric science.

1.What’s your favourite part of the costume process, from prep through production?

I love prep! Gathering materials, setting up an office, and sewing with a team is fantastic. It’s amazing to start from nothing and slowly see everything come together. It’s incredibly rewarding.

2.Who is your all-time favourite costume designer (living or passed)?

I have at least two:

Edith Head – Her work in White Christmas and Sabrina perfectly captured the glamour and elegance of the 1940s and 1950s, which has forever been cemented in my mind as the ultimate way to dress elegantly.

Eiko Ishioka – She was truly a visual storyteller, especially in Bram Stoker’s Dracula (1992), where she created striking body armour that was not only beautiful but also terrifying at the same time.

3.What would be your dream project to work on if budget wasn’t a factor?

Anything that showcases craftsmanship and couture sewing—perhaps a high-fashion show or film. I would love the opportunity to work with weavers, dyers, and embroiderers. Collaborating with people who are the best at their craft would be such an honour, and I would love to learn new techniques along the way.
