Happy Birthday Marquis!

I’ve got so many childhood memories with you, but these two always crack me up. When I first found out I was getting another little brother, I was MAD 😂 I already had to share everything with Ryan while he stayed annoying me lol. Then you came along. Aunt Vivian used to call you “Red” because you would cry until your whole face turned red. Man, your cry was annoying

But even back then, you always wanted to be around me. You used to follow me everywhere trying to hang out with your big brother. One day you followed me without me noticing and ended up getting hit by a car. I was scared to death and mad at the same time.

You’ve always been my most injury-prone brotherbut I wouldn’t trade the memories for anything. Love you little bro. Hope you enjoy your day!

I really can’t put into words how thankful I am for my nephews, my goddaughter, and their parents. Watching them grow up has been a real honor. Honestly, I think I’ve learned more from them than they’ve ever learned from me.

Real talk, without those kids in my life, I don’t think I’d be as emotionally put together as I am today. They’ve taught me patience, perspective, and how to show up better as a man.

Also, for the record, I’m a proud godfather to four amazing kids, and that’s a title I take seriously.

And yeah, I know I’ve been quiet on social media lately. I’ve been taking time to relax, recover, and get my mind right. I’ll be forcing myself back on here Monday.

First off, thank you to everyone who donated to the GoFundMe and reached out to me personally. It truly means more than I can put into words. I’m not going to lie, I cried a few times seeing how much love people showed me.

I’ve been staying off social media a bit to avoid overstimulating my brain and emotions while I focus on healing. Truth is, I was dealing with cancer and only told a select few people because I didn’t want to be babied or treated differently.

Like I’ve said before, I have a bad habit of overworking myself and pushing way past my limits. That mindset caught up to me and started doing real damage to my body, leading to more hospital visits than I’d like to admit. That part is on me, and I’m committed to doing better. I’m taking things slower and being more intentional about my health moving forward.

Once again, thank you to my community for holding me down the way you always do. There is no DJ Root without this community, and I mean that wholeheartedly.

The last few months have been rough. In and out of the hospital, running myself into the ground from working too much. That part is on me. I pushed too hard. Now I’m finally learning to slow the fuck down and take care of myself the right way.

But let me be clear about one thing. I’m not going anywhere, motherfuckers. You’ll still catch me at gigs. I’m just not doing two or three in a day anymore. I’m choosing longevity over burnout and health over ego.

I do not have anything deep or poetic to say here. I just want to give a shoutout to @isaacruiz._ for being a genuinely solid person. I appreciate you a lot!

Sometimes I still sit back and think about how wild this DJ life really is. I’m just a guy born at Garden City Hospital in Inkster, Michigan, who ended up making his way to San Diego. Somehow, DJing has taken me places I never thought I’d see in this lifetime. Bulgaria. The Philippines. Scotland. Cities and crowds I could have never predicted when I first put my hands on some turntables.

And of course, the most important destination of them all… your mama’s house.

Still, it means a lot to be able to rep both the 313 and the 619 everywhere this music takes me. And the craziest part is, I’ve still got two more international trips coming up this year to places I’ve never been. That should be dope.
