Equality Now
Using the law to protect & promote the rights of women & girls around the world for 30 years.

We are grateful for the generosity of our global community, including from people like Chrissy, who says, "While I have always been an advocate for women's rights, after November, 2024 I realized that my current actions were not enough. I chose to become a monthly donor to Equality Now at that time. I have been impressed with and comforted by the work this group continues to do for gender equality on a global scale."
Join Chrissy with a monthly or one-time donation today at equalitynow.org/donate. Your gift will help power our work to achieve legal and systemic change that addresses violence and discrimination against all women and girls around the world and build a gender-equal future to the benefit of all. Tomorrow, we celebrate Mother’s Day in many parts of the world.
We’re honoured to spotlight Kathy Sharpe, a member of our global community who is helping raise the next generation of changemakers.
Since 2022, Kathy has supported Equality Now with a deep commitment to gender equality—not only through her philanthropy, but in how she raises her daughters. As she puts it, “Equality starts at home—in the conversations we have, the examples we set, and the way we teach our daughters to value their voices. It’s a legacy my mom gave me, and one I’m proud to carry forward in her honour—because the way we raise our daughters today shapes the world they, and all of us, will live in tomorrow.”
Thank you, Kathy. And to mothers, grandmothers, aunts, and mentors everywhere: your influence is shaping a powerful new generation of women ready to carry the movement for gender equality forward.

Family law shapes some of the most important moments in our lives; from marriage to inheritance. But in many countries, these laws discriminate against women and girls.
Our work across regions shows how legal systems continue to disadvantage women, and why reform is critical.
Because without equality at home, equality anywhere else is impossible.

The Woman Power symbol first became an icon of feminine resistance in the 1960s — and the struggle for women’s rights worldwide is as urgent now as it was then. To keep up the fight, proceeds from this piece benefit @equalitynoworg, the largest global NGO working to advance legal reforms that address violence and discrimination against women and girls. Their work spans 5 continents and builds support from the grassroots to the global level. And after 30 years of progress, their goals are only getting more ambitious: they’ve committed to reaching over 350 million women and girls with increased legal protection and access to justice by 2030. Our fight is far from over, but organizations like Equality Now remind us that we do have power.

Meet Naglaa.
As Equality Now’s Legal Advisor for the Middle East and North Africa, Naglaa leads work on family law reform across the region, working with partners to challenge discriminatory laws and drive change.
One recent milestone she’s proud of is progress in Egypt, where new measures mean maintenance rulings can finally be enforced, helping women and children access the financial support they’re entitled to.
For Naglaa, this work is about shifting systems, because family law, gender-based violence, and harmful practices are all connected.
She’s now pushing for stronger enforcement of women’s financial rights across the region.

Victory in Connecticut!
Yesterday, we shared that legislators passed the female genital mutilation (FGM) bill in the Senate. Now we can share that last night, lawmakers in the House unanimously passed the bill banning FGM across the state. All that’s left is a signature. Once enacted into law, it will strengthen protections for survivors, marking a powerful step forward, driven by years of advocacy.
But this moment is bigger than one state.
Across the Americas, governments are being put on notice: FGM is now acknowledged as a human rights issue here, and action is required.
Connecticut is moving forward.
Colombia may be next. Read more on FGM from Colombia to Connecticut. Follow the link in our bio

A step forward for equality.
In Connecticut, a bill to prohibit female genital mutilation (FGM) has just passed unanimously in the State Senate, after years of advocacy led by survivors and civil society.
If passed into law, it will bring stronger protections for girls and support for survivors.
This is what progress looks like.

The rise of the “manosphere” highlights a growing ecosystem of online content that promotes harmful ideas about gender, relationships, and power.
As these narratives are amplified by algorithms and monetised for engagement, their impact extends beyond digital spaces, influencing attitudes, behaviours, and relationships.
Addressing this requires a coordinated response: stronger legal protections, platform accountability, and safer digital design - and a closer look at the attitudes which drive this toxic online fringe.

Meet Mel.
As an Associate Manager working in Equality Now’s communications team, Mel works to turn complex legal work into powerful storytelling that pushes for accountability and reform, because how we communicate change is part of how we achieve it.
One moment she’s especially proud of is helping bring the Equal Rights Amendment (ERA) to the forefront through a large-scale projection on the National Archives in Washington, DC (swipe to see), a powerful visual that captured public attention at a critical moment. Shortly after, the ERA was declared the law of the land, marking a major step toward constitutional equality in the US.
Mel is now working to shift how sexual violence is understood and addressed, pushing for systems that believe survivors, handle evidence properly, and deliver justice.

Climate change is increasing the risk of sexual and gender based violence worldwide.
As disasters displace communities and resources become scarce, women and girls are exposed to greater harm, with fewer protections and less access to support or justice.
