Established in 1997, @churchstreetboxinggym is New York City’s largest boxing and martial arts gym, known for training champions like Evander Holyfield and Lennox Lewis. It serves as a vibrant community for diverse individuals—men, women, teens, and young adults—focused on personal growth and self-improvement. We truly cherish the friendships and experiences formed within this space.

Muay Thai is portrayed as a combat sport that blends physicality and artistry, emphasizing grace and discipline in contrast to its often-violent reputation. Inspired by legends like Mike Tyson and Saenchai, me and @loumiinati view it as a form of choreography, where precision and rigorous training lead to confidence and fluidity. Portraits of fighters @lg.pannell @dzik.kargul @mikewithan_a @vanessas_journey @omar__seda reveal their authenticity and evoke pride in their journeys, showcasing the sport’s deeper narrative of struggle and excellence.

Shout out to Kru Chris Kwiatkowski, ( @polish_punisher a professional Muay Thai fighter with nearly two decades of experience and multiple championship titles, including WKA World Amateur and FNF World Professional Champion,  competed internationally in countries like Thailand, Belarus, Spain, and South Korea. Through this photo series featuring Chris, we was able reflect on the importance of community and the support of a team.

With Battle in the basement  which started 4 years ago with battle in the basement 1.  A full exhibition ( safety in mind, padded up with 16 oz gloves, headgear, shin pads and medics ringside) all about fighters getting there feet wet whether it’s a bucket list, or they wanna move to amateur fighting, the last 3 shows there was amateur fights with huge success and turnaround with fighters having moved on to bigger shows such as warriors cup, and the goal to possibility to get into one championship.

Shout to @superareshop for always supporting church st and its fighters!

Artist Spotlight: Justin Santana (@jpeg.cabal)

Next month, Justin Santana’s portraits of residents from the Two Bridges and Chinatown neighborhoods will be installed across scaffolding at NYCHA’s LaGuardia Houses. His work comes out of our programming that uplifts seniors living in Lower East Side public housing communities.

Over the last few months, Justin led portrait sessions with residents at a studio set up on the Smith Houses campus–capturing their ethos through his rich photography. We can’t wait to share more of his work, but first:

Meet Justin Santana!

Justin is an Afro-Latino artist, specializing in monochrome, portrait photography. As an artist and resident of Smith Houses, Justin’s work is hyperlocal–often capturing subjects in his neighborhood. Drawing significant inspiration from Hip Hop culture, his photos create striking visual narratives that highlight his subjects unique features and aesthetics. His minimalist style plays with light, shadow, and texture, allowing viewers to engage with the subtleties of each composition.

Justin’s work serves as a form of storytelling, documenting the many generations that make up his neighborhood. He started his photography journey in 2019, inspired to capture photos of his friends. Since then, his craft has grown in new directions but what remains true is the familial feeling of his work. There is a striking intimacy in what he creates.

This project was made possible with support from the NewYork-Presbyterian Community Fund (@nyphospital) and New York Community Trust (@thenytrust).

Studio space secured thanks to Art on the Ave (@artontheavenyc) and Molly Gochman (@mollygochmanstudio)

Photos by: Mollie Serena (@mollie_serena) and Justin Santana (@jpeg.cabal).
