Taking its name from the polluted river that flows through Shanghai, director Lou’s hometown, the brooding SUZHOU RIVER uses the singular first-person perspective of its unseen videographer-narrator to explore the grubby underbelly of the city, observing the story of an unsuspecting motorcycle courier who finds himself snared in a kidnapping plot and murder rap.

Plays next Wednesday at Metrograph.

New 4K restoration of ALOISË starring both Isabelle Huppert (young) and Delphine Seyrig (adult) as the titular outsider artist Aloïse Corbaz (who created many artworks, like the one pictured here and currently on view at New York's American Folk Art Museum, during her stay in a psychiatric hospital, which lasted more than 40 years) starts this Friday at Metrograph, accompanied by a retrospective of French director Liliane de Kermadec preceded by a short, QUI DONC A RÊVÉ.

Introduction by STRESS POSITIONS director Theda Hammel (@majortransceleb) on Friday, May 15th

SELF-MADE: A CENTURY OF INVENTING ARTISTS at the American Folk Art Museum takes a critical look at the historical definition of the “self-taught artist.” The exhibition examines how artists without academic training–like Corbaz–have depicted, conceptualized, and identified themselves on their own terms. On view through September 13.

Progress through a hopelessly shuffled stack of love letters inspires the a-chronological structure of Hong’s HILL OF FREEDOM—Moon So-ri’s second film with Hong—which describes the terse long-distance relationship between a South Korean woman (Seo Young-hwa) and a Japanese man (Ryo Kase) who has built an ardent romantic fantasy around her, only to, on his return to Seoul after some years absence, find himself gravitating towards a friendly coffee shop proprietress (Moon), whose establishment gives the film its title.

Hong Sang-Soo's HILL OF FREEDOM plays this weekend at Metrograph.

WHERE IS THE FRIEND'S HOUSE? (Abbas Kiarostami, 1987) focuses on an eight-year-old boy, Ahmad, who defies his elders by embarking on a journey to return a notebook and save his friend from potential expulsion.

A hero’s odyssey in miniature, which evinces Kiarostami’s peerless ability to draw extraordinary performances from non-professional actors, his keen insight into child psychology, and his deep affection for rural Iran and its people.

This Saturday at Metrograph.

The chronological narrative of MURIEL, OR THE TIME OF RETURN (Alain Resnais, 1963), shattered into a mosaic of fragments, becomes a puzzle with missing pieces, creating a disorientation so true to our experience of memory that it’s at first utterly unrecognizable in its originality.

On hand to observe its making, Liliane de Kermadec served as set photographer on the film. The film screens next weekend as part of our series, "Liliane de Kermadec: The Price of Freedom."
