Crystal Palace National Sports Centre – Planning Submission

New proposals by FaulknerBrowns seek to revitalise the iconic Crystal Palace National Sports Centre and its wider landscape. The plans restore the Grade II* listed complex while introducing new facilities across the park to support athletics, swimming and community sport.

We worked with the team to produce a series of visualisations, including this aerial image, to support the planning submission and communicate the scale of the proposed transformation.

Concept: The Rail Yards

Where Block A greets a new public square, Block B looks inward to the character of Sussex Street — repairing a historic lane once lost within the wider site.

A mass-timber frame expressed behind a heavy brick plinth, Block B brings a quieter intensity: colonnades, workspace frontages, glimpses of activity and a simple, utilitarian elegance inspired by the warehouses of the Stephenson Works. Its saw-tooth roof and north-light glazing draw natural light deep into the plan, while opportunities for ground-floor makers’ units, mezzanines, and upper-level views across the Tyne Valley ensure that Block B is designed to evolve over time.

Designed for longevity and adaptability, Block B anchors the southern edge of Founders Place, adding depth, grain and a renewed sense of enclosure to this emerging city quarter.

Concept: The Rail Yards

Following the recent momentum gathering around Founders Place, tucked within Newcastle’s historic Stephenson Quarter, we are pleased to share our concept for a future phase — “The Rail Yards” — a modest but carefully calibrated piece of the wider urban regeneration masterplan, delivered through a joint venture between Igloo and Newcastle City Council.

Working closely with @iglooregeneration , and alongside the brilliant teams progressing the current phases that bound our plot — One Founders Place (@ahmmarchitects ) and Orchard Yard (@faulknerbrowns ) — our role has focused on strengthening the public realm, refining key views and drawing on the industrial heritage of the Stephenson Works to create adaptable, mass-timber workspaces that feel at home in this evolving part of the city.

Our concept is arranged as two distinct blocks — Block A pictured, positioned opposite One Founders Place — collectively providing circa 8,000 sqm (c. 86,000 sqft) of primarily workspace accommodation. This split-block strategy resolves complex level changes, reinstates the historic grain of Sussex Street and frames new public realm opportunities with clarity and purpose.

The ALT STUDIOS team are delighted to be contributing to a project of this calibre within the city.

A sensitive Passivhaus villa in North Kensington, designed by @maccreanorlavington

The façade takes cues from its neighbours, picking up rhythms, proportions and materiality while introducing a crisp, contemporary softness through its detailing and massing.

We leaned into the street’s natural shade and early evening light to highlight the brick texture and the restrained character of the proposal.

Throwback to a first draft image we made early in the design process a long time ago but one of those quiet ones that stayed with us.

The scheme and design evolved, but we’ve always loved the softness and organic landscaping. That hazy sun light, the rhythm of glazing and corrugating metal and the stillness of the pond.

Set gently into the heart of Clapton, the new Kings Hall Leisure Centre reimagines a much-loved community space with care and clarity.

We created a series of images to help FaulknerBrowns secure planning approval. Here we captured a quiet moment between city and garden, where the building feels both new and yet familiar.

A visual for a recent cultural project in central Cambridge with @ianchalkarchitects

The brief was to sensitively integrate a new performance space into the historic fabric of the street. A subtle insertion, designed to feel like it was always meant to be there.

For this one we camera mapped a lot of the context onto our 3d model so we could play with the lighting and mood and manipulate some of the internal activities. Think we might follow up with a little image breakdown of this one! 🙃
