We’ve made directories spotlighting some of football culture’s groundbreakers and emerging talents in the past (most recently for #SEASONzine08 ) so it made sense to make another up-to-date list for this year’s @subway_ukireland Women’s League Cup Final programme as the landscape is changing so much. Use this non-exhaustive list of 50 inspiring individuals, purpose-led groups and genius initiatives based in England to fuel your fascination with women’s football. They are grouped into five categories: Community Initiatives, Content Creators, Creatives, Grassroots Teams and Podcasts. SEASON zine ‘You’re Hot’ posts are our 1-2-1s with creative visionaries and spirited communities in football delivering piping-hot innovation through a project or initiative they’ve recently dropped. Spotted on socials or experienced IRL, we get the inside track as they take stock with the benefit of hindsight. Swipe through, sound on. Spread the word and support their work.
When you’re over scrolling through football content on social media or watching games on some kind of screen, what else is there to engage with? Increasingly rare physical publications and books that last much longer and are, objectively, more considered and precious. Honey Ball. Is the brainchild of @barleynimmo ,who dreamed up a women’s football fairytale set in the 1970s. The photographer had the courage and conviction to self-publish a limited edition physical book run of 300 copies in this day and digital age that sets the scene and showcases the realities of the football and fashions of the era (with the benefit on hindsight). But the real focus is the way Barley interprets the emotions that colour the special connection between women and football and conveys them beautifully through his lens. It’s unlike anything we’ve seen before and to present this original story to the world as a book adds weight and gravitas, along with a written foreword by #SEASONzineOG @naomiaccardi that’s as striking as the visuals themselves. Launching Honey Ball. as an exhibition was another masterstroke as the blown-up pictures and physical jersey created for the fictional team really immersed attendees into the dreamy fictional world that Barley created. Swipe through to hear Barley’s take on his impressive football project and his growth as a creative.

The view: “Witnessing a complete sea of red lining the streets of North London on Sunday was something I was not expecting when I arrived at Canonbury station. I was amazed at the amount of support for the Arsenal team on their homecoming parade for winning the Premier League and it was clear that these fans had finally got their wish. It was a massive moment to celebrate! The energy and vibes were so tangible and everyone was In such high spirits, it was beautiful to see and be a part of. I wanted to capture people in the moment but also true supporters — the ones that show up time and time again for their team regardless of the outcome. There were people from all walks of life that turned up, all different backgrounds, ages, race, sexualities but everyone was there for the same reason: Arsenal. What is so special about football is how it can unite people!”

She says : “The day starts with my daily match with @ftfc_nyc , got breakfast with friends after, the majority of my match day rituals were, honestly, deciding my look. Then I went to my usual spot Iona to watch the game but there were very few Palace fans here — just me and three friends as the game was 3pm on a workday. But ! I managed to celebrate afterwards with my football baddies Giulia and Pilar.”

It’s no coincidence that two huge campaigns hooked to the soccer summer ahead by @burberry and @nikefootball contain this archetype. Compliment or insult? The “soccer mom” is a polarising, privilege-laden, high maintenance label that captures a nurturing instinct, on the one hand, but can minimise a diehard fandom that predates the kids on the other. The inclusion signals a shift that widens the scope of how women are represented and the so-called roles they traditionally play in the game. It’s intersectional, and we need to explore the overlapping personal idenitites of women in football much more. Besides that, are you buying what RHW and KK are selling? Because sales and unlocking a family’s pursestrings are success metrics. Sound off in the comments below.

What: “‘Whatever the Weather’. Taken on the night that Arsenal were crowned Premier League champions, this photo series captures the unfiltered jubilation of fans who’ve waited a generation to see their club at the top of English football.
“As a creative, I strive to capture the best of humanity, to humanise us through joy. As a football fan, the last time my team won the league I was nine years old. I captured 22 years’ worth of joy.”
Why: “Supporting Arsenal is a unique experience, with pride and pedigree in the blood of every supporter. Memories of Highbury, memories of FA Cups, of Thierry Henry, and Arsene Wenger. Victoria Concordia Crescit (Victory Through Harmony) in our DNA. But despite the heritage, the journey of the Arsenal fan has been marred by nearly’s, not quite’s, and nightmarish final hurdles. Perennial fourth placers, promising starts that fizzle out and Cup exits that can scarcely be believed. Believe we did, though, that those good times from our childhood could return once again. At the start of every season, we pull on the colours and face out with optimism. We’ve built our club on this hope, our collective love, and last night all of that love poured out at once. Twenty-two years of emotion erupting in cacophony across Islington, cheering, chanting, dancing and fireworks. The sweetest symphony I’ve ever heard, and the final note at the end of ‘Whatever the Weather’.”

The sweetest symphony I’ve ever heard, and the final note at the end of ‘Whatever the Weather’.”

The brilliant artist and #SEASONzineOG , @claraborde , slid into our EIC @feliciapennant ’s DMs to spill and share BTS images:
“I created two unique dresses as a tribute to Saint-Étienne’s 1976 Champions League final against Bayern in Glasgow. This project means a lot to me as a Saint-Étienne supporter, and as a way to tell, in my own language, a story my father has talked to me about my whole life. For now, this is more of an image collaboration and the dresses are unique pieces, but I guess if there’s enough demand we could potentially produce a small run later on 🥹 ”
