Stefan Paul Sauter
“Data Centers” Doctoral Candidate / Laboratory for History and Theories of Architecture, Technology and Media (HITAM) @epflarchitecture

Metamorphosis Complete!
On 01.09.2025 I began as a doctoral researcher at the Laboratory for the History and Theories of Architecture, Technology and Media (HITAM) at @epflarchitecture under the guidance of @athiermann . Alfredo, thank you for building such an extraordinary interdisciplinary lab, for this electrifying opportunity, and for your generosity in making this possible—from a bold call for proposals to a reassuring onboarding. I’m committed to working hard to make the project “Data Centers: An Environmental History of Information, 1850s–1950s” a success!
Grateful also to @xnueno for being a messenger from the past and a role model in the present; to Pedro Correa, Clara Richard, Sylvie Clavel and @ellaneumaier for pioneering the way; and to @agustinalabarca for an already accelerated friendship as colleague, roommate, and now neighbor.
This new chapter builds on seven formative years at @barkowleibinger with the mentorship of @fbarkow and @farbfilter, friendships with countless colleagues, bake-offs and exhibitions at @bl__schaufenster , and the privilege of assisting Regine Leibinger at the GSD (2022–24). Teaching and research with her at @harvardgsd reaffirmed my drive to pursue a PhD.
Dreams only become reality thanks to many angels along the way. Infinite thanks to my parents Patricia and Konrad, to @radueuex for insight and belief, to @nicolay.boyadjiev, @janna_bystrykh and Valeria Guzmán for crucial stepping stone experiences and recommendations, to @moritzmariakarl for careful coaching,to Prof. Milica Topalovic @architecture.of.territory for inspiring texts and conversations, to @psequero1 and @laurasalazaraltobelli for planting a seed, and to @nicoluz_ and @ashleimaria for your generosity in yet another transition.
And to the community that sustain me with strength and joy: my sisters @elke_sauter and @annelisesauter ; my Berlin sisters @katesbl , @oliviaheung, @andrewgoodhouse; @adinrim @matthias.letzner, and @chloehtsui my work wives.
Finally, to my @lorenz_neila9 —thank you for your support, incredible patience, and courage totry this with me, and for being there at every step of this complex transition.
Here’s to the journey ahead!
