At Columbia's 2026 Commencement today, the University recognized these members of the Columbia Engineering community whose work strengthens the School from every angle — in the classroom, the lab, and beyond graduation.

Clockwise, from top left:

🎓 Adam Elmachtoub, associate professor of industrial engineering and operations research, received a Presidential Award for Outstanding Teaching for significantly influencing the intellectual development of Columbia students.

🎓 George Deodatis, Santiago, and Robertina Calatrava Family Professor of Civil Engineering and Engineering Mechanics, Professor of Earth and Environmental Engineering, and Vice Dean for Research, received a Faculty Mentoring Award for demonstrated exceptional commitment to the professional development of their junior colleagues.

🎓 Alumni Rumaasha-Ngabo Wa Maasha BS'94 and Shawn Edwards BS'90, MS'95 each received a CAA Alumni Medal — the highest honor given by the Columbia Alumni Association — recognizing a decade or more of distinguished service to the University.

Congratulations to all four honorees! Read more about this year's honorands and awardees through our #linkinbio #ColumbiaEngineering #SEASTheWorld2026 #Columbia2026

Congratulations to this year’s Columbia Data Science Institute graduates! 🎓 We can’t wait to see all that you’ll accomplish in your future careers 👏

“As data scientists, you have a responsibility not just to innovate, but to ensure that the systems you build and deploy serve society in meaningful ways,” DSI Avanessians Director Garud Iyengar told our graduates during DSI’s celebratory reception. “Wherever your careers take you, I am confident that you will be thoughtful, collaborative, and principled in your work—and that you will help address some of the most important challenges we face.”

A global honor for a Columbia Engineering pioneer —University Professor Gordana Vunjak-Novakovic has received the 2026 L’Oréal-UNESCO International Award for Women in Science— one of just five honorees recognized globally for groundbreaking research in the life sciences.

The Mikati Foundation Professor of Biomedical Engineering, who is also Professor of Medical Sciences (in Medicine) and Professor of Dental Medicine at Columbia’s Vagelos College of Physicians and Surgeons, is being honored for her pioneering work in human tissue engineering and her leadership in advancing regenerative medicine.

Vunjak-Novakovic and her fellow laureates will be recognized in June at UNESCO headquarters in Paris. Congratulations!

Class Day is tomorrow! 🎓

As we gear up for the ceremony, we're hearing from a few of our almost-alumni about the moments, mentors, and mindsets that shaped their time at Columbia Engineering.

Sean Hall (BS, Industrial Engineering & Operations Research) found his "aha" moment in a healthcare operations class — realizing that Emergency Department wait times, ambulance positioning, and transplant waitlists are operational problems with real mathematical structure, and that solving them has a tangible impact.

Yierfan Maierdan (PhD, Civil Engineering and Engineering Mechanics) leaned into Engineering for Humanity through his research on bio-based and earth-based construction materials, working to reduce environmental impact without compromising performance.

Taewan Yoon (MBAxMS) spent some of his time at Columbia co-leading the AI Club, growing it into one of the campus's most vibrant organizations with 900+ active members and 100+ events — a community he built alongside his co-president and close friend, Jose Miguel Luna.

Congratulations to the Class of 2026 — we'll see you tomorrow. 🦁 #SEASTheWorld2026 #ColumbiaEngineering

For Salutatorian Samir Farraj, engineering is a responsibility.

Born and raised in Amman, Jordan, Samir came to Columbia with an early commitment to using science to serve others. That mindset has shaped everything he did on campus — from his hydrogen fuel cell research with faculty member Dan Esposito to his summer research on water scarcity and carbon capture in Jordan to his future work as lead process engineer at AquaPoro, scaling atmospheric water-harvesting systems.

His advice to future students? "Forge your own path and trust your instincts. Pursue what genuinely excites you." @cu_cheme

Congratulations, Samir! #SEASTheWorld2026 #ColumbiaEngineering @columbia @cu_cheme

Meet Alexandra Bradbury BS'26,A @chem_cu and music double major who has spent four years at Columbia doing what she does best: bringing communities together. #SEASTheWorld2026

During her time on campus, Alexandra led the King's Crown Chapter of the National Residence Hall Honorary, served as VP and bassoonist of the Columbia University Wind Ensemble, and music directed four student shows (three of them original). She also represented her class in Columbia's AIChE chapter.

After walking the stage, she'll spend a year in Scotland as a 2026 Saint Andrew's Society Scholar pursuing an MSc (Res) in Chemistry — researching the chemical recycling of nitrile rubbers — before heading to the Cincinnati Conservatory of Music for an MM in Music Theory.

Congratulations, Alexandra! We can't wait to see where you go next.
