🛎️ It's poll time! Through its observations of an enormous object orbiting a nearby star, the NASA/ESA/CSA James Webb Space Telescope has examined the dividing line between planets and stars ⭐❓

Which object was the subject of these observations?

Peeking into Pisces with two telescopes 🐟

The menacing Phantom Galaxy appears in the first image, captured by the #MIRI on board the NASA/ESA/CSA James Webb Space Telescope. Its sharp vision revealed delicate filaments of gas and dust in the grandiose spiral arms, and a lack of gas in the nuclear region also provides an unobscured view of the nuclear star cluster at the galaxy's centre.

The second image features a spiral galaxy that seems more tranquil, UGC 12295, captured here by the NASA/ESA Hubble Space Telescope. Appearances can be deceptive, however – this galaxy played host to a violent supernova first detected in 2015!

Take a journey through space to a star-forming complex in one of the spiral arms of M51. The thick cloud of star-forming gas, which appears here in red and orange, clumps together to form individual star clusters.

Recent observations of star clusters like this from the NASA/ESA/CSA James Webb Space Telescope and @hubbleesa found that the massive clusters emerge earlier from these clouds, illuminating their surroundings with ultraviolet light.

The latest image from the NASA/ESA/CSA James Webb Space Telescope features the barred spiral galaxy Messier 77 (M77), which has an intensely bright core 🔆 set within a dusty disc.

In the view from the #MIRI mounted on Webb, orange lines seem to radiate from its nucleus. These are diffraction spikes, created when light from a very bright and concentrated source interacts with Webb’s structure.

They are most often seen on stars. But in some galaxies, as here, the nucleus is bright and compact enough to make diffraction spikes appear as well!

Astronomers have used the NASA/ESA/CSA James Webb Space Telescope and @hubbleesa to uncover the secrets of star clusters!

Observations of thousands of young star clusters ✨ in four nearby galaxies, including M51, have revealed that more massive clusters emerge earlier from the clouds in which they are born, clearing away gas and illuminating the galaxy with ultraviolet light 💡

🆕 Our ESA/Webb Picture of the Month catches a beacon of light in swirls of dust 🌀

🔴 The barred spiral galaxy Messier 77 (M77) lies 45 million light-years away in the constellation Cetus 🐋. This new image from the NASA/ESA/CSA James Webb Space Telescope’s #MIRI highlights the galaxy’s piercingly bright core.

🔴 This is an active galactic nucleus, powered by a supermassive black hole 80 million times as massive as our Sun. Gas is pulled into orbit around the black hole, where it crashes together and heats up, releasing tremendous amounts of radiation!

🔴 The bright orange lines appearing to radiate from the nucleus are diffraction spikes created by the interaction of light with Webb’s structure. For this pattern to occur, the light source must be very bright and very concentrated, such as M77’s nucleus.

🆕 The NASA/ESA/CSA James Webb Space Telescope is revealing the secrets of star clusters! ✨

🔴 Stars form in clusters, created when clouds of gas collapse. Eventually, these young stars blast away their cloud. Our position in the Milky Way makes it difficult to watch this process in the closest star-forming regions.

🔴 So, astronomers used Webb and @hubbleesa to gaze into the cradles of star clusters 👶⭐ in four nearby galaxies from the FEAST programme.

🔴 These observations showed that the most massive star clusters emerge from their clouds the fastest, subsequently filling their surroundings with ultraviolet light!

What’s going down in Dorado?

The first image shows a view of the Tarantula Nebula from the #NIRCam on the NASA/ESA/CSA James Webb Space telescope. This image, released in 2022, includes tens of thousands of young stars that had never been seen before – thanks to Webb’s near-infrared sensitivity, it is able to detect stars that still have not emerged from the dusty cocoon of the nebula 😶‍🌫️

The second image is from the NASA/ESA Hubble Space Telescope, and features the globular cluster NGC 1805. The striking variety in star colours is illustrated beautifully in this image, which combines two types of light: blue stars 🔵 shining brightest in near-ultraviolet light, and red stars 🔴 illuminated in red and near-infrared. Space telescopes like Hubble can observe in the ultraviolet because they are positioned above Earth’s atmosphere, which absorbs most of this wavelength, making it inaccessible to ground-based facilities.

🛎️ It's poll time! The NASA/ESA/CSA James Webb Space Telescope has recently helped astronomers peer inside the Cranium Nebula 🧠👀 which is being created by an aging star that is expelling its outer layers.

Which of Webb’s instruments captured this view of it?

Two telescopes turn towards the constellation Pegasus! 🐴🪽

The first image features NGC 7469, a face-on spiral galaxy with an active galactic nucleus (AGN) – an extremely bright central region dominated by the light from material falling into the central black hole. This galaxy provides astronomers with the unique opportunity to study the relationship between AGNs and starburst activity because it hosts an AGN that is surrounded by a starburst ring at a distance of a mere 1500 light-years. The resolution and sensitivity of the NASA/ESA/CSA James Webb Space Telescope make it possible for astronomers to gaze through the dust shrouding this system 😶‍🌫️

The second image features NGC 7678. With a diameter of around 115,000 light-years, it is a similar size to our own Milky Way galaxy. It is among the 338 galaxies included in the ‘Atlas of Peculiar Galaxies’, earning its inclusion as a spiral galaxy with one heavy arm.
