Planning Application has been granted for our Helium Airship factory in Nouvelle Aquitaine, France.

This new production and test site for airships, including transfer routes and a take-off area, is led by our joint venture, GAAMMA, a partnership between @goudchauxarchitecteand @mamoumani_architects. Together with @formatengineers & Terrell Group, we developed a computational approach focused on minimising environmental impact at every scale.

From limiting footprint and soil disruption to reducing covered areas and material use, each decision was guided by circular thinking and efficiency. Using genetic algorithms inspired by biomimicry, we evolved a form uniquely suited to its site, achieving a 50 percent reduction in steel compared to conventional solutions.

The result is a one of a kind, eco-friendly industrial ecosystem that integrates gently into the landscape.

This video, created by Format Engineers, highlights the engineering innovation behind the project, reflecting the collaborative thinking that shaped it.

If you are developing ambitious infrastructure and would like to explore how parametric design can reduce impact while creating something truly unique, we would love to connect.

@expedition_engineering and @formatengineers are proud to launch Re-Bridge.
Born from Expedition’s recent research into the reuse of structural steel in bridges and Format’s first-hand experience for Network Rail at Tan House crossing, Re-Bridge is the next step: turning insight into action.
As the first-of-its-kind platform that makes circular bridge design practical, Re-Bridge connects asset owners, engineers, designers, local authorities and industry partners - making it easier to identify, share, and directly reuse bridge components.

Why it matters:
Reduce embodied carbonLower project costsExtend the life of valuable materialsKeep infrastructure in use, not waste
We are now inviting asset owners and industry partners to get involved. If you are managing structures with remaining service life but no immediate future use, Re-Bridge gives them a second life.
Start building the catalogue. Share your assets. Be part of the shift to circular infrastructure.

This year, AntePavillion call was around the theme of ReUse, with a defined stock of material available to designers to propose the 2026 pavilion.
Born from shared interest arround material madness systems, we teamed up with FCB Studios and sketched an idea for a No-Pavilion on the side of a pub table.

Our non-selected entry below:

Locked in a whirlwind of material consumption, we specify, install, and build with resources that travel across the world, sometimes more than once, until we lose sight of their origins.

Materials are ecosystems, yet too often they are broken, exploited, or the product of modern slavery. This is the hidden journey of power and consumerism.

The red louro, for example: one material, countless stories. By tracing its history and the migration of the birds that once inhabited it, we propose a pavilion that reveals the global movement and mismanagement of resources. The nest, as a collective accumulation of materials, draws a parallel between the habitats of birds and humans, highlighting how each impacts the other and our shared need for shelter.

We could speculate that,in its simplest form, the nest might be seen as ironic by the birds who once lived in these very trees: “All this for that?”

Yet in its playful and recognisable shape, it could also inspire hope, a call to repair, a seed for a different stock-led architecture, prompting us to reflect on yesterday and tomorrow through our daily material choices.#reuse #leavenotrace #circularity #architecture #antepavilion

Spine by artist Minh Lan Tran can now be seen in central atrium space of the Museum of Modern Art in Warsaw. The soaring 19m long canvas extends vertically between subtle and elegant steel supports at ground and ceiling level, the natural arc of the work working cleverly with the spatial constraints of the building. A highly unusual work of Engineering. Rather than designing a structure onto which is applied the art, in this instance the canvas, a natural latex sheet, IS the structure. The material properties of the latex, how that would be affected by glue and even the stiffness of the paint itself were modelled using our long-standing tool K2E for @rhino_grasshopper_parametric By using computational tools we were able to predict the degree of elongation and the draping of the work. Armed with this information the Architect for the work, Micaela Costa was able to plan the spatial arrangement. Our work also included design of the minimal connections to the museum, all of which we designed to not damage the fabric of the building.

A map of unfolding inquiry, interactions and convergence, in the making of the Hummingbird Learning Lab.

With collaborators @studiosaar.design and @urquhart_hunt we have been longlisted to design a demountable project for Hummingbird Learning Lab. We are looking forward to the next stages of the selection process.

As seen in the submitted image, we have sought to highlight available co-creation resources from which the project might grow, rather than a predetermined architectural answer.

The competition is being held through the Regenerative Architecture Index (@arch_today and @architectsdeclare_uk)

It was a huge pleasure to assist @brodieneill and his team in the creation of Opal.

We worked with the studio on the design of the internal armature that supports the beautifully patinated bronze panels.

Post by @brodieneill:

Introducing Opal a monumental bronze installation commissioned by Brookfield Properties for One Leadenhall in the City of London.

Comprising 47 individually patinated panels, the sculptural bench reflects the kaleidoscopic character of its historic surroundings while anchoring the atrium with a new civic presence.

Commissioned by Saff Williams, Vice-President of Experience at Brookfield Properties and realised in collaboration with Derek Bailey Patina, Format Engineers and Mtec.

We are growing and are looking for creative and engaged minds who want to play a pivotal role in projects across the world.

We would love to hear from Structural Engineers with up to two years of experience, preferably with a working knowledge of Grasshopper/Rhino and with an ability to write code in C# or python, but primarily we are looking for people with an enthusiasm for engineering design and a questioning attitude.

See our website (link in bio) for further information

We've just released another grasshopper tool - say hello to Giraffe.

Giraffe allows the simple generation of planar panellised forms from any input mesh.

It's really two tools - Lloyds clustering algorithm that uses a Euclidean or normal based error metric to create a Voronoi diagram on any non-disjoint mesh with a user-selectable number of cells. Then a planarising tool follows that attempts to flatten these cells into flat panels. Compared to other panelising methods, Giraffe removes some user control in favour of a simple two-step process with minimal variables. We often use it in combination with Daniel Piker's Kangaroo tools.

Giraffe is a re-release of tools first developed for the 2012 Trada Pavilion back in our RCD days with code written by Harry Lewis (now @mulestudio).

We've updated it for newer versions of Rhino/GH and it's now available on Food4Rhino and the package manager. The source code is also on our github page. Link in bio.

LilyPad, our grasshopper plugin for generating stress lines, is now available on github (link in bio) and the rhino package manager. It will soon be up on food4rhino as well.

We have used the tool on a number of recent projects to explore stress flow and to place material in the most efficient location. Even where the field patterns may not be explicitly expressed, component directions may be subtly tweaked to improve overall efficiency.

Please review the read-me and we’ve provided a series of example files for you to explore.

Instagram
