For years, Emrah Bayraktar did just about anything he could to make money: Cleaned cars. Worked a night-shift in a warehouse. Made sandwiches at a Subway during the day.

When he wasn't eking out a living with part-time work, 25-year-old Bayraktar from Antwerp, Belgium would take out his iPhone and edit long interviews of influencers into snippets and post them to Instagram.

"And then one random night, I saw a notification saying that I earned $12, I was like OK cool," Bayraktar said. "Then two weeks later, I made two-and-a-half thousand dollars, and I thought, 'Maybe I could just quit my jobs and go all-in on this.'"

And he did, earning a cut every time someone bought something from a link he placed in the video clip.

He became so skilled at editing the short videos that he now runs a network of 40,000 freelance clippers and has a YouTube channel where he teaches people how to become clippers, directing them to websites where, instead of getting paid for so-called affiliate link purchases, clippers are paid per view they generate.

Bayraktar's career is a microcosm of how an entire new shadow economy is operating online. Thousands of clippers are inundating social media platforms with bite-sized clips of podcast interviews, sports games, films and other long-form content.

Clippers often upload dozens of the same clips to multiple platforms hoping one of them hits the virality jackpot.

A new breed of online marketplaces like Content Rewards and Vyro are fueling demand for clips, offering a space where marketing agencies can advertise clip-for-cash campaigns.

Music by Beyoncé, Vince Gill and Paul Anka has been added to the National Recording Registry at the Library of Congress.

This year’s additions span generations and genres. There’s also music by Spike Jones and His City Slickers, José Feliciano and the 1975 original cast album of Chicago. There’s music from Chaka Khan, Taylor Swift, the video game "DOOM" and Weezer.

The Library of Congress says the registry preserves the “defining sounds” of American history and culture.

The lush Great Nicobar Island lies at the southern end of the Andaman and Nicobar Island chain. It is home to hundreds of rare and exotic plants and animals, and the Shompen, among the last isolated hunter-gatherer communities in the world.

A billion-dollar infrastructure project underway threatens to upend this fragile ecosystem.

The news on his phone left Richard Brown so stunned he stumbled past the exit of the bagel shop where he was grabbing breakfast. Then, he couldn't find his car in the parking lot.

On that February day, the Supreme Court had struck down most of President Trump's tariffs, which business owners like Brown had been paying for almost a year. The thoughts came to him in a jumble: How would U.S. Customs refund the duties it had illegally collected? When might Brown get his money back?

As he trudged toward the answers to those questions, Brown kept an audio diary that he shared with NPR. And his experience illustrates something that's raising alarm bells among trade experts: the prospect that thousands of U.S. businesses may never get back the billions of tariff dollars the U.S. government promised to refund.

Brown was among dozens of small-business owners who visited the White House on Monday to mark Small Business Week. When Trump took the podium, he praised American small businesses as the country's economic engine. He also bemoaned the Supreme Court's decision for forcing his administration to issue refunds, saying tariffs "made our country rich, really rich." And he said his new tariffs might be even steeper.

A report out today offers new details on math and reading scores for students in the United States — researchers say big losses in learning didn’t begin with the coronavirus pandemic some six years ago, but years earlier.

The Education Scorecard comes from researchers at Stanford, Harvard and Dartmouth. Poring over decades of math and reading scores, researchers say learning recession began around 2013.

As for why learning got so derailed, the researchers have two theories: a big federal education law was essentially abandoned around 2013, meaning school leaders started feeling less pressure to improve, and social media use among children started to skyrocket.

Researchers have discovered a new dinosaur species in Thailand. It’s the largest dinosaur ever found in Southeast Asia.

The dinosaur would have been about 90 feet long and weighed about 30 tons.It was a sauropod, a type of dinosaur that eats plants and has a long neck and tail. Nagatitan lived between 100 to 120 million years ago. It gives clues about how dinosaurs got even bigger later on.

It is the 14th named dinosaur discovered in Thailand, and experts are excited about the expanding fossil record from the region.

The design of this year's World Cup ball comprises only four panels. It features graphics for the three host countries, embossed on the ball: a blue star for the U.S., a red maple leaf for Canada and a green eagle for Mexico. Its name, “Trionda,” is Spanish for three waves.

Sports physicist John Goff said the symbols embossed on the surface of the ball and its grooves make it slightly rougher than its predecessors, which could cause some minor drag while it is traveling through the air.

“My colleagues and I are very interested to see if these balls travel a little less far than the balls have in the past,” he said.
