What is The Box Shop??

The Box Shop is San Francisco’s legendary artspace for monumental, collaborative art.

For 23 years, our space has been home to artists creating massive sculptures, interactive installations, and awe-inspiring public works that reach millions locally and around the world.

We provide affordable studio space, shared tools, learning, and a supportive community. Artists can build bigger and bolder when building together. The Box Shop creates the environment and culture that makes this possible.

Bringing the sound to an all-night lineup at @boxshopsf Saturday, May 30th - Opulent Temple has been around as long as we have - and built much of their staging at The Box Shop in early years.

Opulent Temple is "a leading not-for-profit electronic music stage production emerging from #BurningMan and based in San Francisco. We operate by volunteer effort and are funded solely by donation through fundraiser events all year round.

The trademark DJ booth known as the O-pod is comprised of artfully twisted steel details, designed and welded by the OT resident DJ’s themselves. The stage is illuminated mainly by firelight from DJ-controlled flame thrower effects. The sound is raw, unexpected, full-bodied and visceral. The iconic symbol of the Dancing Shiva has been emblazoned at a wide array of events across North America and Europe. What they find at Opulent Temple is a peak experience of sacred dance to world class music."

"The Reactor is a machine that tests humans on their emotional reactivity. It asks the question: how would a machine rate you on your humanity?

Participants react to emotional scenarios guided by on-screen prompts, and the Reactor uses voice recognition and facial emotion recognition technology to rate their performance. ...One person stands on one side of it to operate the machine, and the "audience" stands on the other side to watch their performance."

Charlie Stigler is an artist and fabricator whose work ranges from monumental steel sculptures to digital installations and immersive experiences.

Two legendary Bay Area creative institutions. One night. Almost the last chance.

​For 23 years, The Box Shop has been a home for artists who build and dream big. Art created here has ended up in front of millions at @burningman , @edc_lasvegas , @coachella and public spaces around the world. You’ve experienced art built here, and you may not even know it.

This Fall, we say goodbye to our longtime home and move to a new space.

​Exit Through The Box Shop is one of the final parties in this space, and we’re making it count.

​We’re teaming up with @OpulentTemple, longtime friends who have built right here in the shop for years. Together, we’ll celebrate our remaining time at Hudson Ave with a full lineup of DJs, serious sound, and, of course, art.

​Dance among the murals: 140+ murals (SF’s largest collection) that will disappear from this corner of SF in just a few months. Come see them while you still can.
