I recently visited the Outland Publishing Fair (@outlandpublishingfair), which focuses on communities and publishers with diasporic backgrounds.

This visit became an opportunity to reconsider how ‘diaspora’ is translated and embodied differently within various cultural and linguistic contexts, rather than viewing it as a fixed category of identity. Whilst the term ‘diaspora’ often refers to experiences of displacement and migration, the publications I encountered on the ground demonstrated that it represents a multiple state where different systems, sensibilities, languages and memories intersect.

What I found particularly interesting was that even within the same diasporic experience, it is interpreted in entirely different ways depending on the geographical and cultural conditions in which it is situated. Some publications treated the diaspora as a sense of loss and disconnection, whilst other works approached it as a possibility for hybridity and recombination. For some, the diaspora is read as a language of deficiency and suspension, but for others, it appears to serve as the foundation for practices that subvert existing systems of belonging and construct new relationships.

I’m sharing a few photos from my visit to London.

On the first day, I had the chance to visit Asymmetry Library (@asymmetryartorg) and spend some meaningful time exploring its collection. Many thanks to @jiaying_kk for the introduction to the space and its holdings. Asymmetry Library is open by appointment from Tuesday to Thursday, and more information can be found on their website below.

Asymmetry Library
www.asymmetryart.org/library

Later, I visited the architecture studio of @of__uk, with whom I previously published the zine For Your Convenience. We also exchanged ideas for a new zine project centered around the theme of the market, which I hope to share more about as it develops. Many thanks to @nafromseoul and @jc_making for welcoming me into the studio.

Instagram
