The Inversion project is an artistic intervention based on a travelling exhibition of photographers documenting Russian military aggression in Ukraine. The project was created by artist Danila Tkachenko with the support of the non-profit organisation Garivo.

For the Inversion project, 9 military photojournalists and 12 Ukrainian refugees were invited and agreed to participate in the project.

An aluminium frame measuring 2.80 by 3.76 metres was created, on which 12 photos were alternately placed and shown on the streets of 7 different European cities.

All funds raised from the Inversion project will be donated to units of the Ukrainian army

Thanks to Ukrainian refugees and photographers who agreed to participate in the project.

Installation of 11 mannequins covered with black cloth. Former Gulag concentration camp. Taimyr.

More than 15 million people became victims of the Soviet terror, among them Ukrainians, Poles, Belarusians, Georgians and many representatives of other nations. Today the Russian state, which is a direct heir and follower of the bloody regime, continues the genocide of the Ukrainian and other peoples.

What is capable of stopping the violence? Today, first of all, it is the victory of the Ukrainian army in the war, with the return of all occupied territories. But this is not enough to maintain peace and security in the future. It is necessary a complete decolonization not only of Russia, but also the consciousness of people in relation to it.

My personal project, in the former prison of Basel.

4 video work and 396 pages of my criminal case.

« Danila Tkachenko creates the plastic equivalent of a prison grid from the materials of his criminal case, as anti-war beliefs have become a serious crime in Russia. A close reading of the fabricated criminal case reveals the lies and the hidden, everyday mechanismsof the deplorable political system as well as the squalor and the cynicism of its tyrannical lining.

Against this backdrop are the four video works of the Fire Games exhibit. They were created during a time of war that changed the artist's life and his art. When people are dying, long-term projects seem impossible. Broken fates and killing require an immediate vivid response, an activist gesture, a loud call to action, and a demonstration of the madness of what is happening.

How could an artist inculcate a sense of the tragic absurdity of war in the minds of the passive Russian viewer? Danila reflects on war through his pyrotechnic techniques and his explorations with smoke bombs and explosives. With his camera, he conceptualizes the materiality of war in the materiality of his works, each time finding subjects at the intersection of art, activism, and personal history. »

Today many people are worried about the fate of Russian culture. Russia is now waging a brutal military aggression against Ukraine. The real tragedy of Russian culture is that many of its representatives have chosen to remain silent about it. Photo #5 from the "Mel" series, cardboard models of Pushkin monuments are installed on the shoals of the Aral Sea, which has become a victim of ecological disaster.#freeukraine #russiaterroriststate

The toxicity of the Russian colonialist state is now pouring out, threatening the entire world with a nuclear attack. Only complete decolonization of Russia and the post-Soviet space can ensure security and mutually beneficial development. The pictures show places contaminated with radiation. From Project «Acid». ————————————

“Unsuccessful action” by Danila Tkachenko

On 9 May, a criminal case was opened against me in Russia. My friends and family were searched and questioned, my girlfriend's relatives too. My friend was beaten up and sent to jail for 10 days, my mother is threatened with a criminal case. The reason for this is my failed peaceful action which I was preparing for May 9th. I acted alone and did not inform anyone about my plans.

I had bought in advance 140 blue and yellow smoke grenades which I fitted into two air-conditioners and placed outside the window of an apartment not far from the Kremlin. The launch was supposed to happen remotely, but the action was prevented by the FSB.

I left Russia, but now my relatives and friends are in danger.

Today my country is kept hostage by terrorists who took their power by force in the Russian Federation. They conduct criminal, militaristic aggression against other countries and individual citizens. I, artist Danila Tkachenko, express my solidarity with countries and people who suffered from the aggression of the Russian authorities. Today is the day of the great victory over fascism, for which the lives of many nations were laid. The Russian government has nothing to do with this victory and is trying to capture the memory of it in their criminal interests. Meanwhile, just like the fascist invaders, it is bombing peaceful cities and is killing people. Let's keep our eyes open. No to war.
