Spilled Milk has been officially selected as part of the Oscar-qualifying HBO Short Film Award Showcase at the 30th Annual American Black Film Festival!

Before the cameras rolled, Spilled Milk lived on an office desk in plastic bricks.

Director Jared Leaf used LEGOs to pre-visualize nearly every shot of the film, turning a kid’s toy into one of the most practical planning tools on the production.

It saved time, kept costs down, and made the whole pre-production process genuinely fun.

A great location transports you to a whole new world. In our case, we needed to find the perfect domain for our villain — the Milk Man.

Here’s how we found our “Beulah Mart”, why the store’s layout was just right for the story, and how our DP @jus_van_gogh utilized what the store already had to create the film’s distinctive look.

What’s not mentioned here in this creative overview 1) how this location strategically fit with our budget and logistics. Our producers @kacielehner and @jwatson718 did an amazing job of negotiating a manageable rate for our shooting days (nights) and finding a location that had space and parking support for our crew and production infrastructure. And 2) how the art department @christopherjbeltran @kendramarin and @undefinedlaboratories did an incredible job utilizing what the store already had, added a few of their own touches, and enhanced the character the store already had.

Milk was spilled at @paffnow🥛 Congrats to @spilledmilkmovie for winning the Audience Award 🏆

Ever heard of a lemon cucumber? 🍋🥒

Despite the name, it’s not a lemon. And it doesn’t taste like one either.

The lemon cucumber itself is an heirloom cultivar developed and popularized in the United States in the late 1800s, becoming widely grown by American gardeners by the early 1900s.

Known for their round shape, bright yellow skin, and crisp, refreshing bite. They’re sweeter, less bitter than traditional cucumbers, and ridiculously hydrating.

Big shoutout to @japhetyng of Happiness Family Farm for putting us on!
