Celebrating our April Graduate Student of the Month, April Yazza! 👏
A Diné and A:shiwi scholar originally from Tsayatoh, New Mexico, on the Navajo Nation, April is pursuing her doctorate in Educational Leadership through the Native Americans in Educational Leadership cohort at the University of New Mexico, where she maintains a 3.83 GPA.
April’s work is rooted in creating educational systems that strengthen identity, cultural integrity, and collective well-being. Her doctoral research explores how Indigenous higher education professionals navigate institutional expectations while remaining grounded in cultural responsibility and community care.
As April shares, “Being a Native Forward Scholar means carrying responsibility. It means representing my home community with integrity… and modeling that asking for support is not weakness — it is wisdom.”
Her leadership extends across research, mentorship, academic service, and community engagement. April serves as an Academic Coach for the Native Forward Rising Native Graduates Program, contributes to educational research initiatives at the University of New Mexico, and recently completed a ten-month AmeriCorps service year supporting youth programming at the Native American Community Academy.
Through scholarship, advocacy, and service, April continues to uplift Indigenous students and communities while modeling culturally grounded leadership for future generations. Congratulations on your accomplishments, April!

Meet Brittany Black Eagle, our April Undergraduate Student of the Month! 👏
An enrolled member of the Assiniboine and Sioux Tribes of the Fort Peck Indian Reservation from Bismarck, North Dakota, Brittany is pursuing a double major in Indigenous Leadership and Social Work at United Tribes Technical College, where she maintains a 3.78 GPA and earned Vice President’s List honors.
Brittany’s journey is grounded in leadership, service, and uplifting Native communities. As she shares, “Being a Native Forward Scholar means representing Native American people by furthering our education and using that education in our communities to help Native peoples.”
She serves as Vice President of the Thunder Society cultural club and is an active member of the HSPC Club supporting students in Human Services programs. Beyond campus, Brittany demonstrates her commitment to community care through volunteer work with the 701 Closet and Soup Kitchen through Heaven Helpers, while also chairing AA meetings on campus.
Through her education and advocacy, Brittany plans to use her voice and leadership to support Native communities both on and off the reservation. Congratulations on your accomplishments, Brittany!
