2020 – so much change, so much hardship. My heart goes out to all humanity as we tumble our way through this unprecedented and challenging time. There has been some magic and brightness too, and as I reflect back on the months I'd love to celebrate @jessicamatsaw and @smatsaw , their beautiful family, and their non-profit - @river.newe (pronounced River New-uh).

In 2019 I was lucky enough to tag along on two river trips they organized, fundraised for and operated, taking tribal youth down the Middle Fork of the Salmon River in Idaho. These trips are exceptional for a variety of reasons - the Middle Fork is their ancestral homeland, tribal members often have never seen it, they experience both traditional and tribal classrooms as they float down the river, they connect with the powerful spirituality of the place, and they get quiet time in a safe and supportive environment. The kids and families also get time to simply play in a preserved landscape free of development and modern human intrusions.

During the journey downstream I was constantly struck by River Newe's effectiveness in reaching the delicate heart space of the youth, offering powerful healing and simply being an awesome hand of reassurance during a pivotal time in their lives.

Beyond organizing and leading these trips Jessica has earned her masters degree in education, Sammy his PhD in biology. They dedicate themselves to their kids, grandchildren, community and their community's future. And as I begin my own journey down the road of parenthood I can't think of better mentors. Thank you Jessica and Sammy for being incredible pillars of support, guidance and love to all that you meet.

If at the end of the year you're looking to give back, their non-profit River Newe is seeking donations. Contributions will fund tribal river trips and promote healthy and safe mentorship, guidance and field based education. I sincerely can't recommend a more worthy organization. You can reach their website by googling "River Newe" and then clicking donate. I also shot and directed a short film based on our trips - google "River of Return" to watch on youtube.

This is my first reel. It’s taken 10+ years to get around to making it. For one reason or another I've shied away from the exercise of publicly showcasing what I do.  I’d get started, find another reason not to do it, and put the hard drive away. Today, I decided to say f*&k it, take a risk, and showcase the work I’ve been lucky enough to do and the people I’ve been lucky enough to do it with.
None of this would be possible, my career or any of this work, without the tremendous support, brilliance and grit of our community.  Endless thanks to @ben_moon, @krystlejwright, @rushsturges, @carlzoch, @bchendrix, @bennymrr, @jaygifford, @shan_banan, @travisrummel, @ben_knight, @sturgegram, @thenorthernyeti, @gnarquist, @tim_hardy_, @ansonfogel, Hayden Peters, @ladzinski, @max.lowe, @nampix, Ryan Fenson-Hood, @duzer, @markdeming and many many more.

Learning to fly has always been a dream of mine. For the last 9 months I’ve been squeezing lessons in between work and other commitments. Last Tuesday I got the green light from the FAA that I’m cleared to leave the instructor nest and start roaming on my own.

Instagram

Anonstories
