Since its concrete base first began rising high above the valley floor, the STRAT Tower has become a Las Vegas icon. Originally named the Vegas World Tower by its developer and legendary casino mogul Bob Stupak, the 1,149-foot-tall tower features a 13-story pod that includes indoor and outdoor observation decks, a revolving restaurant, meeting rooms, and an emergency refuge floor at the base of the pod.

The first concrete was placed in March 1992, and the topmost mast was set by helicopter in November 1995. Along the way, the final design height increased by about 100 feet from the original concept, and a formwork fire in August 1993 stalled construction for several months. The tower opened to the public in April 1996.

Wright Engineers founder and CEO Brent Wright served as the lead structural engineer for the project while a principal at a prior firm, leading the design of what would become the tallest freestanding tower in the United States at the time. Since then, Wright has continued to provide structural engineering services for a variety of renovations and additions to the tower and the adjacent hotel and casino.

Communication is often assumed but rarely achieved. As the saying goes, nothing is so simple that it cannot be misunderstood. That may be why some construction problems begin not with bad work, but with one innocent question and two very different interpretations. Somewhere between the question and the answer, clarity turned on its blinker and headed the wrong direction.
