The US military says it has launched new strikes on southern Iran, targeting Iranian missile sites and boats attempting to place mines.

US Central Command said in a statement the strikes were taken in "self-defense", and were designed "to protect our troops from threats posed by Iranian forces".

Iran is yet to respond to the latest US strikes. It is unclear what impact they will have on any potential peace agreement between the US and Iran.

That provisional figure, recorded in Kew Gardens, also surpassed the hottest bank holiday Monday on record - 33.3C on the August bank holiday in 2019.

Video released by Essex Police shows the moment a dangerous driver was found hiding in a swamp at the end of a high-speed pursuit.

They said the man was followed at speeds of more than 100mph (161km/h) along the A13 into London on 14 January, at times driving on the wrong side of the carriageway.
He later abandoned the car near Rainham and was seen on bodycam footage being chased on foot by an officer and his dog, who discovered him "cowering in swampy grassland by the roadside", a spokesperson said.

Former SNP chief executive Peter Murrell has admitted embezzling more than £400,000 from the party over more than a decade.

An EasyJet flight was diverted to Rome after a power bank was found to be charging in the hold.

The flight was three hours into its journey from Hurghada in Egypt to London Luton when it landed in the Italian capital on Tuesday night as a "precaution".

Many airlines have toughened their rules on power banks, often requiring them to be stored in hand luggage because of the risk of lithium-ion batteries catching fire.
