Disability Culture Lab
DCL is a nonprofit disability media & narrative lab, by & for disabled folks. We exist to dismantle ableism & celebrate disabled community & culture.
Who out here supporting Disabled, Trans, Queer folks? It's @DisabilityCultureLab
And very excited to support fellow Crip artist @jennaepetersen who designed this shirt!

From transphobia and racism to colonialism and capitalism, every form of oppression is disabling. The disabled community cannot separate ourselves from other fights for justice. We have always existed in every community and always will. 10/10 cats agree. Check out @disabilityculturelab's new summer streetwear line "We’re Still Here: Fashion Against Fascism" to support their work toward our collective liberation.

Our Summer 2026 streetwear drop, We’re Still Here: Fashion Against Fascism, is here!
This new streetwear line is a direct response to increasing attacks on multi-marginalized disabled folks and the disabled community at large. This collection is about community, resistance, and joy in the face of these attacks.
Over the past year, Disability Culture Lab has collaborated with 40-plus disabled community members to envision what disabled liberation means, especially as fascism grows. The messaging in our summer 2026 streetwear drop draws from these visioning sessions, with new designs from amazing designers Johnnie Jae @JohnnieJae, Sky Cubacub of rebirthgarments, Jennae Petersen @JennaePetersen, and Jen D. Rafanan @JDRafanan_LLC.
This line provides a look into a radical future, while we fight to get there as soon as possible.
Head over to Shop.DisabilityCultureLab.org via the link in our bio to grab your items today! We’d love to amplify any posts with talking about the messaging on your DCL streetwear — please add us as a collaborator on Instagram, or tag us on LinkedIn, BlueSky, Facebook, or Instagram.

Doctor @jbullockruns of @docswithdisabilities for Disability Culture Currents: “I am in no way unique as a disabled person who has felt harmed by the health system. But when I demonstrate agency to serve, these traumas transform, helping me care for, and connect with, my patients.”

For Asian American Native Hawaiian Pacific Islander (AANHPI) Heritage Month, we at Disability Culture Lab asked three disabled AANHPI leaders the following question: “Who in the disabled Asian American, Native Hawaiian, and Pacific Islander community inspires you right now and why?”
Through their answers, Kay Ulanday Barrett (he/they/siya) @brownroundboi, Krystal Kavita Jagoo (she/her) @equitableforall, and Dennis Tran (he/him) @denvtran reflect on the deep history of disabled AANHPI resistance, the power of representation, and building on the work recent disabled ancestors have done in the fight for liberation.

It’s a huge honor to be recognized on the @Forbes #ForbesAccessibility200 list as an innovator and impact-maker in the accessibility space for the second year in a row. As one of the only trans-led disability groups in the world (and on this list), we know just how important it is to lift up the work of the most marginalized disabled folks among us.

For National Women’s Health Month, we’re spotlighting mav vega (they/them), a writer, artist, and scholar who blends a deep love for humanity, liberation, and sociology with a commitment to truth-telling. As a fat, disabled, queer person of color, their work illuminates the realities of the world, examining the interconnected struggles and joys that define our shared existence.
Disabilities coded as gendered or “women’s” disabilities deserve equal respect, inclusion, and accommodation. From migraines to endometriosis, postural orthostatic tachycardia syndrome to myalgic encephalomyelitis, and from birth injuries to trauma from gender-based violence, we still have a fight to ensure that is the case. Folks from across the gender spectrum are harmed by the underfunding, undermining, and sidelining of women’s health.
mav’s experiences as a nonbinary person are “heavily shaped by womanhood” in their words. Patriarchy and gender-based violence are disabling, and in their essay “Pooled Blood” for Disability Culture Currents, mav shows how domestic violence and disability are deeply connected.

The background is off-white on top, with a white section in the middle. At the top, in bold dark red letters, reads “Friday May 1, 2026 @ 12-1:30PM EST.” Below it, in large bold red letters, reads “May Day” with “Virtual and Accessible Rally” underneath in smaller dark red text. On the right hand side is a black and white hand in a fist. Underneath all of this is a dark blue box with “Organized by Stand Up For Science” in white text. Below this, is an image of a laptop with arectangle overlapping it that has ripped paper-like edges with two bullet points that read “Virtual: online, open to anyone with Internet access and a digital device with a current web browser. no additional hardware software needed.” and then the next bullet point is “Accessible: free, ASL interpretation, live-captioning, and Spanish audio interpretation.” Underneath this is a horizontal band of dark blue, dark red, and red stripes with “Fight for our science. Defend our workers. Protect our future.” written on top in white bold text. On the bottom left of the page, there is a URL to register for the event, “tinyurl.com/VirtualMayDayRally.” To the right of this URL there is The Stand Up For Science logo, a red rectangle with Stand Up For Science written on it in white. Next to it, there is a vertical black line, and to the right of this line there is black bold text saying “May Day Strong.”

Calling all creative Disabled Queers! We’d love to feature your Pride-related illustrated and written submissions in Disability Culture Currents (DCC).
Our publication explores disability culture and identity through opinion, personal essay, and graphic storytelling. We are especially interested in pieces from Intersex, Trans, and Two Spirit creators, as well as graphic storytelling pieces for Pride. Topical news ties are encouraged.
We pay $75 per published U.S.-based submission. We aim to increase pay for writers as we fundraise additional resources. We do not pay for unpublished submissions.
Creators maintain ownership of their submissions, and the right to republish their work 90 days after publication in DCC. We do not accept submissions created using generative artificial intelligence (AI).
Pride submissions are due by May 15, 2026. Visit the link in our bio or tinyurl.com/DCCurrents for more information and how to submit!

For Earth Day, we recognize that environmental justice, disability justice, and climate justice are one fight. From extreme heat and super storms, to fossil fuel extraction and processing, climate change and environmental racism are disabling.
Artificial intelligence (AI) data centers being built across the U.S. and globally are disabling people by poisoning our air and water and abusing workers.
Disabled people are also often left out of disaster planning and emergency infrastructure, and as climate disasters increase, disability support and infrastructure must too.
Together, disabled communities everywhere must fight for a livable and accessible world. Find ways to plug in and organizations to support on the last three slides.

Transit is about more than just a bus or train — it’s about how we access work, school, family, community, and joy. In a new op-ed for Next City @NextCityOrg, Disability Culture Lab’s Executive Director Meier Galblum Haigh (they/them) @mghaigh and Managing Director Kenrya Rankin (she/her) @kenrya argue free transit isn’t enough — we need accessible transit too. They break down the ways in which current transit systems don't work for disabled people, and offer big ideas for making cities more accessible.
A huge thank you to partners like Senior and Disability Action @sdaction1, United Spinal @unitedspinal, Disability Cultural Center @disabilityculturalcenter, and more whose staff and organizing are working to change many of the issues brought up within this piece.
You can read more at the link in our bio at tinyurl.com/PublicTransitOpEd.

Trans justice and disability justice are one fight across the world, for so many reasons. Our latest piece in Disability Culture Currents is “In Search of Trans Identity and Community in Cairo,” by Amara Refaat (he/her) @amaraya___, an anthropologist and writer in Egypt. In the essay, Amara explores his Trans and intersex community in Cairo, and the process by which her community gains safety through legal ID — which requires registering at a psychiatric hospital. From Amara: “It was clear that, regardless of our actual psychiatric backgrounds, the insistence on labeling transness as an illness rendered us all ‘insane’ in the eyes of the state, and therefore society.” But that rendering also brings legal ID, financial security, community, and so much more. The background is dark teal with a repeating lightning bolt pattern. There is a transparent speech bubble with a yellow outline and single bright green lightning bolt in the top center. Inside the speech bubble is a quote: “It was clear that, regardless of our actual psychiatric backgrounds, the insistence on labeling transness as an illness rendered us all ‘insane’ in the eyes of the state, and therefore society,” in white text, with “insistence” in teal with a bright green block highlight. Below in white text is the author name and occupation: “Amara Refaat (he/her), Anthropologist and Writer.” Underneath is the title of the article: “In Search of Trans Identity and Community in Cairo.” In the bottom left corner is the Disability Culture Currents logo, which has white and bright green text that reads “Disability Culture Currents,” with a green lightning bolt icon to the right. In the bottom right corner, white text reads “Link in bio: tinyurl.com/DCCurrents.”
