I had the honor of being commissioned to create this painting for the public defenders office here in Los Angeles. I, along with seven other amazing artists, were able to shadow public defenders for a day and see the amazing work they do to help the public. Here is the result. The Los Angeles Public Defenders Office was the first in the country thanks to the hard work of the first female lawyer on the west coast, Clara Shortridge Foltz. In 1878 she persuaded the governor to sign a bill allowing women to practice law and in 1893 she presented her idea for a public defender system to the Worlds Columbian Exposition. It wasn’t until 1914 that the LA County Board of Supervisors saw the value in her concept and established the first public defenders office. The Supreme Court eventually ruled in 1963 that all states are required under the sixth amendment to provide counsel to defendants who cannot afford it on their own.

Folts was once quoted “Justice should be free; but it is not”. In this current political climate we’re seeing the brutality of man on full display for the world to see in real time while survivors live with the horrors and lifelong effects and others collect profits. My heart breaks knowing progress is slow and justice will never be free. I cant even begin to imagine how difficult it was for the poor to defend themselves in a courtroom in this country prior to the PDO, and in much of the world it is probably worse even to this day. As flawed as our judicial system is in this country, I am grateful to have come from a place where people have the resources to prove their innocence, fight for their rights, and have some recourse in determining their future even after committing grave mistakes. Thank you to the incredible individuals across this country who fight for the rights of the innocent and the guilty.
