⏰ Time-saving trick!

Context can completely change how a design is understood, and manually placing parts can be tedious and painfully slow. But the Make Pattern and Settle tools make it easy to quickly add realism and communicate product intent.

If you want to try this workflow:

1️⃣ Import supporting components and use Make Pattern to populate your scene.

2️⃣ Select the model set, go to Position → Move Tool → Settle, and enable As Parts for natural placement.

Tools like this help bridge the gap between concept and clear communication. Although they are simple features, they are truly huge time savers.

🤯 Exploded views are more than cool renders -- they're super helpful for communication. @atom.engineering dives into it:

At first glance, the AE-H1 Hotend looks quite basic, but as the system begins to explode the complexities within become apparent. From integrated pogo-pin assemblies for power transfer, to thermal heat breaks, and replaceable heater blocks.

Throughout my career, I’ve found exploded views to be one of the best communication tools, as it provides unique insight and clarity to the system, that would otherwise be difficult to convey. To take that a step further, visualizing designs through animated exploded views can be even more powerful. With minimal effort viewers are quickly able to understand how a system is intended to function and come together.

This can help to drive more impactful discussions during design reviews, and ensure the team is aligned.

➡️ One feature in KeyShot that helped bring this animation to life was the addition of camera keyframes. Adding movement to the camera as the assembly exploded and re-assembled.

➡️ To do this, simply open the Animation Timeline, click the Animation Wizard, and select Camera Keyframe. From there you can set keyframes along the timeline to create more complex paths.

Axis | RW-S8-W15 🔩

I’ve really been enjoying the @renderweekly challenges here of late. There’s something so entertaining about taking a very basic design prompt like “Design/render a concept that implements a drill bit”, and trying to come up with a creative solution.

As I do with nearly every render weekly challenge, I start by sketching various different concepts in the @conceptsapp which you can see the progression on the second to last image in this post.

I initially was really drawn to the thin industrial design concept in the bottom left, that utilized cutouts in the main body and a sliding lock mechanism to secure the bit.

I’m not sure what gave me the idea, but the thought crossed my mind to utilize a concealed barrel hinge mechanism to allow for the tool to operate off axis to improve the mechanical advantage while operating the driver. Hence the name ‘Axis’. I went back and forth on the form factor of this concept. I could either go with a cylindrical form, or the hexagonal form and play to the existing geometries of the drill bit. I liked the hexagonal form for a couple of reasons, one of which being it almost looks like an Allen Key when it’s in the L shaped configuration.

The concept ended up coming together even better than I had initially thought it would. The addition of the spring clip was a last minute addition, but it helps add to the overall design asethetic, while also providing functionality.

Vectra Packaging Prototype 📦

As I mentioned in the video I’ve been thinking a lot about the Vectra product, as well as the Iteration Labs series. I’d like to see the series become a product validation funnel where designs that make it to the final stage consistently become physical products sold on an ecommerce website.

In pursuit of this goal, I’ve re-engaged with @voydgroup to partner on packaging design, a product launch plan, and ecommerce website. Their team was phenomenal to work with during the rebranding of Atom Engineering, and I can’t wait to see what we’re able to come up with during this new phase.

These cardboard tubes from @papertubeco are the perfect packaging solution for the Vectra wall hook. Not only does it provide an efficient solution, it also makes for an enjoyable unboxing experience as the product is on display when opened by the customer. Additionally the 3D printed pedestal helps keep the various hardware in place during shipment.

Over the next few months I’ll be continuing to work with Voyd to define our launch strategy and begin working on the website. I’ll also be engaging various manufacturing companies to see which partnership makes the most sense for Atom, as the final product will be CNC machined.

My long term vision is to have a catalog of products designed by me and sold through this ecommerce website.

Re-Imagine Design Challenge ⚙️

This was one of the more entertaining design challenges I’ve participated in some time. When @victorinox reached out to me and asked me to consider submitting my own design concept I couldn’t pass it up.

Part of what made this design challenge so entertaining was the low barrier to entry, I didn’t have to spend hours in CAD refining geometries, only to spend even more time perfecting the scene to capture photorealistic product renderings.

This design challenge was more about the concept and it’s alignment to the design principles and mission of Victorinox (the company that developed the iconic Swiss Army Knife™), than it was about the fidelity of the design.

This made for a unique experience where I spent equal amounts of time thinking about how to “Pitch” the concept as I did working through the design of the product.

My entry into this design challenge is the “Victorinox Maker”.

“The Maker consolidates essential tools for prototyping, electronics, and light fabrication into a compact, trusted platform. It brings Victorinox heritage into the modern workshop, helping creators move seamlessly from design to physical execution.”

If you’re interested in participating, the submission window is open until March 6th.

On April 1st, a short list of creators will have the opportunity to present their concepts to the Selection Expert Group.

From there the finalists will participate in a prototype sprint from May 1st through July 31st.

With finalist designs being revealed each month October 1st through January 2027.

In March 2027, a community vote will occur to determine a winner of the 5 finalists.

Concluding with the winning design entering full production in December 2028.

Strong designs don't always speak for themselves, especially if they're only shown through CAD screenshots. Mechanical design engineer Wyatt Weaver @atom.engineering shares how "Once I started incorporating high-fidelity renders into my design reviews, the conversations changed.

Design Iterations ⚙️

When I initially designed the Vectra wall hook, I wasn’t focused on the mounting solution at the time, I was more focused on the relative size and ratios of the features. Creating something that looked visually balanced.

Which meant when I finally got around to designing the integrated mounting solution, I was pretty constrained on the footprint. I tried to minimize the scale this slot shaped feature so as not to dominate the back surface of the hook.

This design decision later became a constraint for the viable mounting hardware. If I didn’t want to blow out any features, I was limited to a #4 countersunk flathead screw. At the time I thought that would be sufficient looking at the size of the screws relative to the wall hook in CAD.

However after printing out the first prototype it was clear that although this wall hook is meant for relatively light duty use, two #4 mounting screw was a bit to minimal.

So I increased the width and height of the mounting slot footprint to allow for #6 hardware to be countersunk, without blowing out the chamfer features.

An added benefit of this update is the mounting component now has slightly more surface area for the laser engraved logo to be placed on.

Just another reminder of the value that 3D printing provides for rapid prototyping in pursuit of finalized designs.

Prototype Builds ⚙️

It’s always interesting to see the transition from digital to physical. Experiment 01 was no different.

I knew the wall hooks were relatively small as I had intended for them to be used primarily to hang jackets and other relatively lightweight items. However seeing the printed versions reminded me just how compact they really were.

I was a bit surprised at first with how small they were, but as I placed them up on the wall to view, I was quite happy with the scale. They don’t feel overly prominent on the surface of the wall, which was my initial concern.

Additionally this allows for multiple to be placed on a wall without feeling busy.

My only concern that I’ll need to vet through testing is if the mounting hardware is sufficient for the application. They’re relatively small as I was space constrained. However I believe it will be sufficient.
