Today, Border Forensics together with the Center for Sociodigital Futures releases the new investigation “How ‘stopping the boats’ kills’: A digital counter-forensic investigation of the human cost of the UK’s externalised border in the Channel”

The report shows that the #UK’s “stop the boats” policy has in fact led to an increase in deaths. Find full report on our website.

At the same time the numbers of boats and people crossing fell.

Our research found that the increased numbers of deaths in the Channel took place close to the French shore as a result of new mechanisms: extreme overcrowding and chaotic launches.

We linked these trends to increased border policing, aerial surveillance, and supply chain disruption.

Combining geospatial analysis, coastguard records, activist datasets, flight tracking, and interviews with affected people and solidarity structures, the investigation reconstructs how policy decisions reshape crossing conditions – and how border violence becomes measurable across space and time.

We publish as the French and UK governments finalise their next deal to police illegalised migration for 2026-29.

While they debate how many millions more to spend and what dangerous new tactics to use to try and ‘Stop the Boats’, we show the failure and human cost of their policies.

Our work is dedicated to all those who have lost their life at the UK’s border, and those who they left behind. Towards freedom of movement for all.

“Albania is neither a destination nor a transit station but a space perpetually reconfigured to fit shifting geo-political interests—an open-air processing zone where isolation and oblivion are reframed as hospitality.”

METHOD AND PRAXIS is an exhibition that brings together the work of Manifesto Collective and Border Forensics, seeking to shed light on a multilayered process of investigative and creative research. The exhibition is divided into two zones, the first of which is dedicated to specific persons. Border Forensics’ investigation into the police murder of a Black Swiss and South African man, Roger Nzoy Wilhelm, is shown alongside Albanian cases such as the coverup of the death of Ardit Gjoklaj, a minor who was illegally employed in a landfill overseen by the Municipality of Tirana, and the torture of Khalid El-Masri, a German citizen kidnapped by the CIA and subsequently abandoned in Albania. This ongoing fusion of illegality with power and politics has led to the creation of several extraterritorial zones within the country, zones that are further explored in the second zone of the exhibition, dedicated to the Camp. The analysis uses a 67-millisecond video sequence – the only footage showing both of Nzoy’s hands.
Its high resolution enabled a precise forensic analysis.

From four extracted frames, we studied the size, shape, and motion of #Nzoy’s hands – open vs closed. The police investigation ignored this sequence, despite the witness who filmed it testifying that Nzoy held nothing.

By cross-referencing a #3D model of the scene with the camera’s perspective and optics, we measured the distance to Nzoy’s hands.
The pixel data gave us a precise dimensions: 19.7 cm. Our results matched Nzoy’s autopsy records.

The frame-by-frame motion shows his left hand outstretched across his body and his right hand with visible finger articulation.
Both moved naturally as open palms. This is bio-mechanically inconsistent with gripping a knife.

The result of our analysis challenges the prosecutor’s claim that Nzoy ran at the officer with a knife.
