The sun rises over Lofi Forest. It’s release day! Lofi Forest graduates from our Concept fonts to a full typeface. Much anticipated by all pixel-based flora and fauna. Now with a full character set, OpenType features, extensive language support, an accompanying Solid style, and a little owl animation by Selma.

Plastique Frame, A to V. That’s as many letters as I could fit into 90 seconds. The animation was made while searching for the key to life and to figure out a way of animating variable fonts in After Effects. Both difficult tasks, both require a lot of time.

Duplex, uniwidth, or multiplex are terms that all refer to the same principle in a typeface: identical metrics across all styles. When you change from Regular to Bold or to Italic, the paragraph will stay intact and not reflow. The design of a multiplex type system can be best compared to growing a watermelon in a cube. Or maybe designing a monospace font. In any case, the room for expansion is limited and subject to hard constraints, which can lead to interesting design solutions. Oh, and Plastique is duplexable. Or uniwidth, multiplex, equal width, or fixed width.

🧸 OUT NOW: Plastique 🦄

Plastique is a typeface suitable for both body text and display typography. The design language is a reference to plastics manufacturing, which is reflected in the many small curves and soft transitions that contrast with the clear, simple forms of an industrial sans serif typeface. In addition to the the six Upright and Italic styles, which are duplexable and ideally suited for UI environments, Plastique offers six Frame styles that graphically emulate the injection molding process.

Kilo Type | William Montrose

After an internship at FontShop International in Berlin and earning an MA in Typeface Design at the University of Reading in 2013, William Montrose worked in and collaborated with several type design studios. In 2018, he founded Kilotype together with Selma Losch. Their award-winning practice centers on highly individual and experimental designs as well as complex variable type systems.

Ignacio Casco is a type designer and lecturer at Greenwich University. Before establishing his own independent foundry, Best Typefaces, he worked with several type design studios, contributing to a wide range of commercial and custom projects. His work blends geometric rigor with everyday usability, with a focus on technically robust type systems that remain refined in structure but hard to ignore in character.
