HELLOOOO LOS ANGELES! I will be at @northfigbookshop on May 15 @ 5:30 to celebrate the release of my prizewinning debut novel, GO HELP YOURSELF from @uno_press, with a reading and conversation with the great @benloory !! I can almost guarantee a chuckle or two, and I will sign almost any book you bring to me, but preferably my own. RSVP link is on my linktree and website.

*About Go Help Yourself*

Meet Corbin Moore, a twenty-something lapsed writer whose job at a struggling, off-brand spiritualist bookshop in Seattle meshes well with his regimen of smoking cannabis, binge eating, and doom-watching the news. That rut is interrupted by the return of his overbearing mother, Geraldine, a famous self-help guru who’s looking for a guinea pig. Add in the daily deluge of Corbin’s deep-seated insecurities and body dysmorphia, the prospect of reunion with still beloved ex-girlfriend Beth, and nonstop harassment by a murder of near-murderous crows, and you get a person most in need of help-but from whom, and how?
Sharply funny and surprisingly tender, Daniel Pope’s debut asks the question: What if we’re not broken in all the ways the prophets of American self-help say we are? This book is for all the people self-improvement leaves behind.

*about Ben Loory*

Ben Loory is an American short story writer. His first book, Stories for Nighttime and Some for the Day (Penguin 2011), was a selection of the Barnes & Noble Discover Great New Writers Program, and was named one of the 10 Best Fiction Books of the Year by Hudson Booksellers. His second book, Tales of Falling and Flying (Penguin 2017), was named a Favorite Book of the Year by the staff of The Paris Review, and one of the 50 Best Fantasy Books of All Time by Esquire Magazine.

Loory’s fables and tales have appeared in over 100 magazines and journals, including The New Yorker, Tin House, The Sewanee Review, Electric Literature, BOMB Magazine, TriQuarterly, The Adroit Journal, The Kenyon Review, Fairy Tale Review, Wigleaf, and A Public Space. GO HELP YOURSELF is OUT TODAY from @uno_press. Wow. To think that this little boy (yes, that was my hair), who wanted to be a veterinarian, would grow up to write a book about a guy who smokes a lot of weed!!! No but seriously, the book is awesome, but don’t just take it from me—the great Alexandra Kleeman, author of You Too Can Have a Body Like Mine and Something New Under the Sun, said this about it:

“A spirited, rollicking picture of our culture’s tangled messaging around real life, inner life and aspirational life—and one with a beautiful, beating heart. Daniel Pope has nailed the coming-of-age narrative for a moment when the old world is dying and the new struggles to be born—and he does it with preternatural grace and breathtaking insight into the pleasures and pains of embodied life under late capitalism.” (THANK YOU @alexandrakleeman !!!!!)

Once, as part of some icebreaker thing, I was asked to choose my favorite animal, and I said I couldn’t choose between crow, raven, wolf, or bear. And someone said, “Ah, you like the T-shirt animals.” Well THEY’RE ON T-SHIRTS FOR A REASON, BUCKO!!! You gotta play the hits!! So this book is all about CROWS, those charismatic denizens of the overworld who embody fate and wisdom and, to me, the wild and mysterious darkness of the Pacific Northwest, which can never be subsumed or erased but always persists in excess of all the categories with which we attempt to trap it.

The book is also about self-loathing; writing it was an attempt to get beneath my humor defenses and, yes, to Help My Self. Every novel is an attempt to heal, I think, and a utopian striving to push beyond the brain-numbing boundaries of the actual. So to everyone who thinks they’re always fucking up, that they can’t get anything right; to everyone who struggles with eating disorders, addiction, depression, anxiety; to everyone immune to self-help and hooked on self-sabotage, who compulsively compares themselves to others, who feels like shit all the time not because they hate the world but because they love it and see in it the dream of a better one: this novel is for you.

And if you’re not all that stuff, it’ll still make you laugh! Okloveyoubye!!!

*About Livonia Chow Mein*

In the vein of Happiness Falls and Family Lore, a gripping story of family history and political upheaval centered around a Chinese family-owned restaurant in Brownsville, Brooklyn and its impact on the neighborhood’s Jewish and Black residents over the course of a century. “With flair and grace that make this an utterly enjoyable read,” (James McBride, author of The Heaven & Earth Grocery Store), Livonia Chow Mein contemplates how the American pursuit of freedom relies on a collective amnesia, and challenges us to consider what it would take for us to truly live in harmony.

2025 has been mega fucked up for countless reasons, but it has also been one of the best years for music in recent memory. These albums were beautiful reprieves, messages of hope, welcome cigarette breaks from the endless doom buffet. Not in any particular order aside from my top three:

1. It’s a Beautiful Place by Water From Your Eyes
2. Bleeds by Wednesday
3. Friend by James K
4. Headlights by Alex G
5. Vanities by Malibu
6. Magic of the Sale by Teethe
7. Bury the Key by TOPS
8. caroline 2 by caroline
9. Fancy That by PinkPantheress
10. Lux by Rosalía
11. choke enough by Oklou

Honorable mentions: Cameron Winter, FKA Twigs, Wet Leg, Forth Wanderers… I know I’ve missed some but that’s all I have energy to do right now.

BIG BIG NEWS GUYS. My novel, GO HELP YOURSELF, has won the @uno_press Publishing Lab Prize and is being published (!) in May 2026! If you like CROWS, CLOWNING ON SELF-HELP BOOKS, and SMART, FUNNY, SELF-HATING NARRATORS, then this is your kind of book.

Hermione Hoby called the novel “an absolute corker of a comic novel which, like all the best funny stories, cracks a reader’s heart as it goes.” One of the judges for the prize called it “A Confederacy of Dunces for the self-help generation.” Sounds pretty good!!!

If you want to sign up for my mailing list to keep apprised of novel news, I’d like to introduce you to my friend LINCOLN BIO. (Click the link in my bio.) If you’re interested in reviewing it, let me know and I’ll make sure you get an Advanced Review Copy.

Okay that’s all for now. Peace and love everyone ✌️ xoxo, Daniel
