Did you know we don’t count a number for the last posture? Instead calling it 18 ashtaudasha we call it Samasthitimeaning evenly standing or attention.Surya Namaskar B. Sun fantastic B with Sanskrit count. 18 steps.

Can you tell why I call the breathe cue at the end? Give it a try with both breathing cue first then at the end. You will see that you can breathe much longer and more slowly. Both methods are good as long as it works for you.

Save this and practice and memorize. Pretty powerful skill in your teaching tool kit.

A little fun challenge from headstand: L-headstand. Takes real core and shoulder control, especially that serratus anterior wrapping action: shoulders moving away from ears by pushing the interlaced forearms into the floor, serratus anterior and bottom of the rib cage pulling toward just below the belly button, a scooped-under-the-ribcage sensation that quietly refines both. Coming from Ashtanga, but applicable to anyone with a solid headstand practice.

In purple is Julia, a solid and refined transition from headstand to L-headstand to child’s pose. A treat to have her back and sharing practice with us.

Teaching on a Saturday deserves a spot on the grid.

We’re all about to have an out of body experience 😉

After dialing back for some time from teaching, I find myself gravitating back toward the joy I find in a studio full of people, moving, breathing, peeling back the layers and dropping whatever extra weight we’re carrying around that particular day. There’s nothing quite like it.

Yoga has a way of humbling you over time. Not all at once, but gradually, honestly. I teach both vinyasa and Ashtanga, and my personal practice is often Ashtanga.

For years I moved through Primary with relative ease.

Injuries that predate my practice have gotten worse.

The body at 59 has its own opinions.

Poses I once took for granted are asking more from me than I have on some days.

What surprises me is how little I resist it. I keep waiting to feel defeated. I don’t.

Maybe that is the practice working. Not the flexibility or the strength, but the capacity to keep showing up without needing it to look a certain way. To find the space between pushing and letting go, and to be okay with wherever you land in that space.

If you are navigating something similar, on or off the mat, I see you.

Awww… we are officially star struck. Jessie, who plays Elphaba in Wicked, has been coming to our classes,

and yes… we absolutely had to ask her what she thinks about Second Side.

Now we kind of want to see her defy gravity in person.

Wicked is playing at the Music Hall at Fair Park through June 7th. Who’s into a Sunday matinee? We are definitely going to cheer her on from the seats.

A snippet from one of Susie’s classes showcasing one of many effective cueing techniques.

Many ways to cue movements and transitions, but the core of good cueing is delivering the necessary information in a timely manner so movement syncs with breath whether it be 1, 3, 5 or even 10 depending on your intent.

Sometimes that means cueing the actual steps. Other times, simply naming the posture is enough. The key is getting students in and out of the corresponding action at the right moment.

There is no single “right” or “wrong” way to cue, but there are ways that better support the flow of the class and the students’ experience. That’s what makes each teacher unique and why different students respond to different teaching styles. Teachers should cue in ways that feel authentic to them, while always keeping the students first.

Always beautiful to see Second Side teachers continually honing their cueing to better serve their students, each in their own unique way.
