Last year I went to Taishan it’s neighboring counties where my grandparents are from, and watched lion heads being made by hand. What surprised me most was seeing women at the worktables shaping the faces, layering paper, painting each detail.
I grew up studying lion dance myself, performing across San Francisco. Seeing the craft behind it — the bamboo frames, the papering, the paint — felt like a full circle moment.
The workshop I visited in Kaiping traces its roots back to 1888. For generations it has produced lion heads, drums, and instruments for Awakening Lion teams across the diaspora, including many here in the United States.

Watching the work up close, lion dance is performance. The real work is craft, labor, and lineage.
