Come greet the season of regrowth with me at @createartdanforth on the Danforth :) Take a ceramics class with us and see what new things we can make blossom this spring. Monday Nights I teach a Queer Pottery Class, Tuesday nights is an Intro to Pottery Course, and there are tons of other options for you to try! Link in my Bio :)

Finally getting back into throwing for myself. Time for experimenting! 💚

Tried to watch myself throw, all I learned was I make faces. This reclaim was extra gnarly.

Back in June, we had the pleasure of having @tshaskell for Gather atthe Gallery, Cultural Connections program! Attendees learned about life in Trinidad & Tobago, alongside Thomas’s artistic practice and upbringing. We go too try delicious Caribbean food catered by @madhusrotianddoubles. Attendees than got to follow along in creating Anthropomorphic Fruits! #KitchenerWaterlooEvents #WaterlooRegion #KitchenerWaterloo #KWawesome #KitchenerWaterlooEvents #workshops #artworkshops #ceramicworkshop #clay #cermic #clayclass #seniorliving #seniorevents

I had the honour and privilege of running a talk and taste talk, along with a hands on workshop at @cdnclayandglass in Waterloo as part of their Gather at the Gallery program. I gave a talk on ceramics in Trinidad and Tobago (Big shout out to Radika Pottery in Chaguanas) and then talked about my own practice, as well as my experience on The Great Canadian Pottery Throwdown. I’ve been so lucky to have had the opportunity to do workshops and talks across the province, the highlight of which is of course meeting the amazing clay communities that form around our shared passion. The gallery provided Trinbagonian staples like doubles, pholourie, aloo pies, peardrax, and coconut water! It felt like a perfect lil slice of home. The food of course was a huge hit, and if you’ve never had doubles, I recommend Kish’s, Ali’s, or East Danforth Roti in Toronto.
Then I came back and ran a workshop on my Consuming Caribbean line of anthropomorphic duppy fruits, and to make it extra Ontarian we did apples! What followed was a bushel of the strangest and most wonderful fruits. The reception I got from the attendees was heartwarming, they had so much fun doing something so out of the box! This is the energy that fuels me. Laughs were had, fruits were covered in eyes, mouths, and fingers, and I was truly touched to have been a part of it. The ceramics community in Canada is bountiful and full of some of the most amazing and inspiring people I’ve ever met. Every day I work with people in clay reminds me of the joy we get in making. Enough gushing, get out there and make something fun!

This past Saturday I had the absolute joy to attend @tuckers.pottery 50th Anniversary. An entire day of pottery, people, and fabulous activities. From amazing talks by @spectrum_glazes_demo, @amacobrent and so many more. There were free samples, free food from @heirloomtoronto that was to die for. All day raku, endless discounts, it really was such an amazing celebration. I got to see the absolutely angelic @claygirlceramics and spend the day chatting clay, eating, and definitely getting sunburnt. (Rookie error) The icing on the cake was definitely watching the clay olympics, which I volunteered for at the last second. We had some titans in the pottery world competing, @juliemoonceramics and @michellemendlowitz were, as always, masterful. Truly so thankful to Tucker’s for having such a brilliant celebration, and always so heartwarming to be surrounded with by the pottery community here in Toronto. Warm hearts, blazing passions, deft hands. It was glorious at every turn. Bravo again Tuckers, the bedrock of our community. 💚

Happy Valentine’s Day everyone. Pictured, my heart; fired to cone 6 in a faded palladium glaze. Small, hard, and removed. 🫀

A year ago today the first episode of The Great Canadian Pottery Throwdown aired. I can wax poetic about how much it changed my life, the opportunities that came from it, but ultimately it’s about the people involved. We may be miles apart, but we all share a precious part of this. And that’s for life. I’m so thankful for the love that poured out, and to be a part of a cohort of people who love clay. We had the chance to share our love of ceramics with an audience that loves it with equal magnitude. I thank everyone involved with an open heart, and look forward to new and exciting projects.
Big love to you reader, hope you enjoyed watching it as much as we enjoyed making it.

One of my favourite things to reflect on is how we make faces, how we sculpt them, and how that changes over the years. These were all part of a series about Mama D’lo and how coral is so vibrant, fragile, and slowly being destroyed. Each time I make a face I think about who they could be, when you make faces what do you think about?
