🎧 𝗔𝗨𝗗𝗜𝗢 & 𝗣𝗘𝗥𝗙𝗢𝗥𝗠𝗔𝗡𝗖𝗘 𝗟𝗔𝗕 — 𝗔𝗣𝗣𝗟𝗜𝗖𝗔𝗧𝗜𝗢𝗡𝗦 𝗢𝗣𝗘𝗡

Join our 𝗜𝗡𝗙𝗢 𝗦𝗘𝗦𝗦𝗜𝗢𝗡 next week 𝗼𝗻 𝗠𝗔𝗬 13 𝗮𝘁 𝟭𝟭𝗔𝗠 𝗘𝗦𝗧, 🔗 𝗜𝗡 𝗕𝗜𝗢!

UnionDocs is thrilled to launch the next iteration of the 𝗔𝗨𝗗𝗜𝗢 & 𝗣𝗘𝗥𝗙𝗢𝗥𝗠𝗔𝗡𝗖𝗘 𝗟𝗔𝗕 — a 3-month exploratory program where a cohort of sound-based artists collaboratively develops an original collection of audio-first performance works for a live audience.

Expanding beyond the confines of your headphones, APL engages sound in shared physical space, inviting 12 artists working across sound design, oral history, music, audio documentary, field recording, theater, improv, experimental spatial audio, and more to collectively conceive, produce, and stage a slate of bold new pieces.

From September through December, participants will work together to create 6–8 sound-focused performances, guided by interdisciplinary director, the brilliant 𝗔𝗮𝗿𝗼𝗻 𝗘𝗱𝘄𝗮𝗿𝗱𝘀 [ @aaronmedwards ] alongside a slate of visiting artists, technical mentorship, and a crew of fellow practitioners. The lab culminates in a series of live public performances in December.

Through weekly meetings, collaborative production teams, shared source material, and a rigorous staging process, APL offers space to experiment, rehearse, and build a collective audio-driven performance from the ground up.

If your practice engages sound, voice, performance, or listening, this lab could be for you!

WOW, thank you for all the love on our NUEVAYOL x LOS SURES post — so many of you saw the same echoes, textures, and neighborhood spirit across decades.

Today, we wanted to spotlight LOS SURES (1984), the film from the video, directed by Diego Echeverría and offer folks a chance to watch the whole thing!

If you haven’t seen it yet: you can stream LOS SURES for FREE through the UnionDocs Membership with a 7-day free trial.

The film is an intimate portrait of South Williamsburg during a time of massive change, capturing everyday life and struggle, joy, resilience, and the culture that shaped the neighborhood.

“Both an invaluable record of pre-gentrification Brooklyn and an ode to a community’s resilience.” -@bam_brooklyn

UnionDocs restored LOS SURES over a decade ago, and it became the foundation for our ongoing Living Los Sures project, work rooted in the same community we called home for 18 years.

🧱 💫 Past → Present → Future: Unearthing a Little Piece of Ridgewood History for Our Rebuild!

When we first landed on Onderdonk, we went digging through the NYC historic tax photo archive and stumbled onto an enchanting 1930s snapshot of our building, taken just 10 years after it was built. There it was — the original corner-cut entrance, a distinctive architectural flourish found across Ridgewood, documented thanks to the immense effort of the Works Progress Administration and stewarded by the incredible NYC Municipal Archives

Fast forward to the 1980’s tax photo and that beautiful entrance had been sealed over — a small loss in the long timeline of the neighborhood.

Now, in this rebuild, we’re bringing it back.

The restored corner entrance will soon welcome you directly into our new entry and restored storefront — a bright, communal space for gathering, making, sharing a toast or a drink, and seeing installed works from artists across our programs. It’s the heart we’ve always imagined for UNDO, and we cannot wait to open those doors very soon.

We’ll be sharing more transformation updates as we continue the project, but right now we’re reaching out for help.

To get over the finish line, we’ve created a 🎁 GIFT REGISTRY 🎁 — a collection of the everyday essentials that future visiting artists and residents will rely on.

Choose an item that speaks to you, or contribute any amount that feels right.

TOMORROW, FRI, MAY 8 — 7:30PM

𝗪𝗘’𝗥𝗘 𝗦𝗜𝗖𝗞 𝗧𝗢 𝗗𝗘𝗔𝗧𝗛 𝗢𝗙 𝗔𝗟𝗟 𝗧𝗛𝗜𝗦 𝗡𝗢𝗡𝗦𝗘𝗡𝗦𝗘 returns with: SAFFRON TIME.

Our shape-shifting multimedia series curated by poet 𝗖𝗵𝗿𝗶𝘀𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗲 𝗟𝗮𝗿𝘂𝘀𝘀𝗼 [ @______kiki___________ ] and writer/curator 𝗥𝗮𝗰𝗵𝗮𝗲𝗹 𝗥𝗮𝗸𝗲𝘀 [ @rachaelrakes ] merges live performance, reading, sound, and moving image — not quite a reading, not quite performance, not ekphrasis. WS2DOATN is a porous encounter between words, images, and whatever slips through.

This month, we’ll be thinking about: SAFFRON TIME, seasons folding into one another, tears that don’t dry, flowers blooming before they can live, and the strange work of continuing together.

Featuring:
— Readings by 𝗝𝗵𝗮𝗻𝗶 𝗥𝗮𝗻𝗱𝗵𝗮𝘄𝗮 [ qjhanip ] & 𝗦𝗮𝗺𝗽𝘀𝗼𝗻 𝗦𝘁𝗮𝗿𝗸𝘄𝗲𝗮𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗿 [ @sampsonstarkweather ]
— A screening of 𝘛𝘏𝘌 𝘎𝘈𝘙𝘋𝘌𝘕 𝘈𝘔𝘐𝘋𝘚𝘛 𝘛𝘏𝘌 𝘍𝘓𝘈𝘔𝘌 by 𝗡𝗮𝘁𝗮𝘀𝗵𝗮 𝗧𝗼𝗻𝘁𝗲𝘆 [ @krazykosmickid ]

Each edition begins with a phrase and unfolds through fragments, performances, and images — loosely structured, collectively shaped, and resistant to resolution.

Ceres X at @uniondocs 🎬

An evening of films where food became memory, ritual, and resistance... across neighborhoods and ecosystems.

Grateful to everyone who gathered with us, and to the filmmakers and collaborators who shaped the evening: Astrid Malter, @anitavolker_hl, @jake_sumo, @alisonbartlett1, Jordana Rubenstein-Edberg & Marshall Hanig, and @fenixcommunityfridge.

From Ridgewood to global perspectives, each story offered a glimpse into how food carries care, culture, and connection.

A thoughtful panel with Astrid Malter, Fenix, Jordana Rubenstein-Edberg, and Natalia Fuentes, moderated by @missmolinga, followed by ice cream from @icecreamwindow, brownies, and @enjoyacid.nyc tastings.

💛 Thank you for being part of it

TOMORROW, 𝗧𝗛𝗨𝗥𝗦, 𝗠𝗔𝗬 𝟳 — 𝟳:𝟯𝟬𝗣𝗠

We’re thrilled to co-present a special screening of 𝘕𝘌𝘞 𝘒𝘐𝘕𝘎𝘚𝘛𝘖𝘕 with @rockawayfilmfest, the filmmaking debut of artist 𝗞𝗲𝘃𝗶𝗻 𝗕𝗲𝘄𝗲𝗿𝘀𝗱𝗼𝗿𝗳, followed by a conversation with filmmaker 𝗝𝗮𝗺𝗲𝘀 𝗡. 𝗞𝗶𝗲𝗻𝗶𝘁𝘇 𝗪𝗶𝗹𝗸𝗶𝗻𝘀.

Filmed entirely on an iPhone and scored with Bewersdorf’s own music, the film moves through the seasons in upstate New York, patiently documenting the rhythms of building, repairing, and living. James first encountered the film at @rockawayfilmfest, where it was described as “a refreshingly understated portrait of craftsmanship and the satisfaction that comes from a job well done.” It screened before James’ own feature. Reflecting on the lineup, he writes:

“While our movies couldn’t be more different in execution and worldly expectation… they share a feeling of having been made despite themselves… New Kingston, in particular, offers a vision (a documentary? an essay? an ode?) of the artist pausing during his day job, not to imagine the movie he could be making under more ideal conditions, but rather to continue making the movie already in the making, which is to say life.”

As UNDO continues to exist in a state of construction, we’re especially excited to share a film that dwells so thoughtfully within the rhythms and meaning of that process.

We were so happy to be featured alongside several other incredible community spaces by @filmmakermag in their recent piece on communal cinema in Ridgewood — and to see 𝘈𝘍𝘛𝘌𝘙𝘐𝘔𝘈𝘎𝘌, a film created during the 2024 UNDO CoLAB, highlighted as part of that story ✨

Centered on the Ridgewood Theater, once a cornerstone for moviegoing in the area, the film traces its afterlife through the memories of former residents and the ongoing efforts of local artist James Torres, who has recreated the theater’s marquee beneath the Seneca Ave M train. What emerges is not just a story about a building, but about the loss of a shared cultural space, and the ways communities hold onto it.

Developed during CoLAB while UNDO was newly rooted in Ridgewood, the project grew out of conversations with neighbors about borders, belonging, and the shifting landscape between Queens and Brooklyn. It’s incredibly meaningful to see that process reflected back in this article, and to have the film contribute to a larger conversation about place, memory, and communal cinema.

We’re grateful to @filmmakermag for bringing new audiences to this story. Congrats to the 𝘈𝘍𝘛𝘌𝘙𝘐𝘔𝘈𝘎𝘌 team —

The open call invited films that resonate with these themes: portraits of home that construct alternate realities, reimagining time and memory. We were blown away by the range of submissions! A huge thanks to everyone who submitted thoughtful, inventive, and deeply felt works from across contexts. After a painstaking deliberation with Aslı and Kim, we’re so excited to share these three additions with you!

Organized with @airtime.world and @speciwomen’s @at.magnet Residency, this evening foregrounds porous boundaries between maker and audience, and celebrates imagination as a form of resilience. A conversation with filmmakers will follow.
