"I have Zinzi and Ryan, and there's no two guts I trust more," Proximity Media co-founder Sev Ohanian says. "I bring the data, they bring the guts."
The trio of Ohanian, Ryan Coogler, and Zinzi Coogler founded @proximitymedia in 2018. The production company is home to the box office shattering and Academy Award winning vampire film "Sinners"—which broke the record for the most Oscar nominations in history earlier this month.
In this episode of The Truth About Leadership, the founders discuss navigating impostor syndrome, balancing their personal and professional relationships, and what they learned from their first jobs.

Over the past two and a half decades, three women’s professional hockey leagues had launched and collapsed, victims of fragmented ownership, insufficient funding, and infrastructure that couldn’t support elite athletes trying to build full-time careers.
So future hockey hall of famer Hilary Knight was skeptical when she joined a players’ committee to negotiate terms for yet another new league.
But the Professional Women’s Hockey League (PWHL) shattered the mold. It launched in January 2024, and just months later, set a pro women’s hockey attendance record for a single game. It expanded from six to eight teams for its second season, and attendance jumped 52.5% season over season.
But none of this would have happened had the league not taken critical steps before the first puck ever dropped.

With gas prices, energy bills, and grocery costs all rising, the affordability crisis is top of mind for most workers.
And just as affordability has worsened recently, so has the gap between regular workers and the rich, including company CEOs.
The top 1,500 CEOs of the world’s largest corporations saw their pay increase 20 times faster than workers last year.

“Looksmaxxing” entered the zeitgeist in earnest after its patron saint, the 20-year-old influencer Clavicular, appeared at New York Fashion Week last month, with profiles in The New York Times and GQ.
The term “looksmaxxing” and the goal of “optimization” are closely associated with what’s become known as the “manosphere”: a somewhat loosely related ecosystem of online communities and groups that promote outdated views of masculinity, rampant misogyny, and an opposition to feminism.
Now? Manosphere lexicon is entering the workplace.
While the concept of the manosphere may feel new to those who don’t closely follow internet subcultures, its language—and the problematic ideologies it describes—have been slowly seeping into daily life for years. What’s changed is that we now have the tools to recognize it.

When you’re building sets for a musical that’s populated by flying vampires, you have to challenge yourself to think three-dimensionally.
But Dane Laffrey is used to challenging himself.
Over the course of his decades-long career in theater, the Tony-winning scenic designer has been tasked with bringing to life some of the most memorable sets in recent Broadway history—from a sandy, 360-degree Caribbean archipelago for the 2017 revival of "Once on This Island" to the futuristic South Korea setting of 2024’s "Maybe Happy Ending."
Now Laffrey’s set designs are literally soaring to new heights—while also sinking to new depths—in "The Lost Boys," a dynamic and at times acrobatic musical that opened last month at Broadway’s Palace Theatre.

Now Laffrey’s set designs are literally soaring to new heights—while also sinking to new depths—in "The Lost Boys," a dynamic and at times acrobatic musical that opened last month at Broadway’s Palace Theatre.

Chriselle Lim had no experience in the fragrance industry before relaunching the perfume brand @phlur.
Last year, the company was acquired by TSG Consumer Partners and was projected to reach $150 million in annual sales.
@chrisellelim's takeaway? "Don't let imposter syndrome stop you from trying things out that you feel very strongly about," she said.

Ruggable, the company that launched nearly a decade ago on the premise that rugs should be washable, has been on a mission to reimagine the jute rug.
And after nearly two years of development, it is launching a machine-washable rug called Performance Weave that mimics jute so convincingly, you would need to touch it to know the difference.
To create it, @ruggable had to embark on a complex process of reverse engineering to give customers all the qualities they love about jute—the complexity of its texture and color—while making it softer to the touch and washable.

It’s not just you. Workplace stress is at a breaking point and starting to manifest in some alarming ways.
Overstressed workers are crying, having panic attacks, and even using substances to cope with work stress while on the job in strikingly high numbers.
A new report from Modern Health found that employees are deeply stressed, feel largely unsupported, and that it’s all bubbling over to the point that it’s impacting their behavior at work.
The stress is changing the way employees show up.

When Kenya’s Sabastian Sawe crossed the finish line at the London Marathon on April 26, an Adidas attendant was waiting on the sidelines to collect his shoes.
In that moment, the Adidas Adizero Adios Pro Evo 3 became the fastest shoe in the world.
Sawe was the first person to ever run a sub-two-hour marathon in an official race, followed closely by Ethiopia’s Yomif Kejelcha, who finished with a time of 1:59.41. Fellow Ethiopian Tigist Assefa set a women’s world record of 2:15.41. All three of these runners, who are official Adidas partners, wore the Evo 3.

It’s hard enough to publish a book, but getting people to buy it is an entirely different battle.
As new platforms reshape how readers gather and interact online, authors are finding that sometimes platforms built to showcase writing can also double as powerful engines for discovery.
The most high-profile example so far might be "Girls" creator Lena Dunham, who bolstered the traditional press tour for her new memoir "Famesick" with interviews and features on the newsletter platform Substack.
While promoting her memoir, Dunham did interviews with a range of the platform’s newsletters. Though Dunham may be the latest high-profile Substack convert, she’s hardly alone.
“Ten years ago, the publishing industry’s center of gravity was the bookstore and the New York Times list,” Andrea Barzvi, an agent and president of Empire Literary, tells Fast Company. “Today, discovery has been outsourced to algorithms."

A temporary exhibit in Manhattan is displaying the sheer enormity of the Epstein Files through 17,000 pounds of paper.
The Donald J. Trump and Jeffrey Epstein Memorial Reading Room, organized by the Institute for Primary Facts, holds 3,437 volumes and roughly 3.5 million pages of documents released by the Department of Justice earlier this year.
Exhibit organizer David Garrett says the DOJ's redactions failed the people the law was designed to protect. "The Epstein Files Transparency Act clearly stated that survivors and victims' names were to be redacted — and the names of co-conspirators and perpetrators were not to be redacted," he said. "The Department of Justice seemed to do the opposite."
The Reading Room is open to the public by appointment only until May 21. The exhibit organizers "encourage visitors to turn [their] experience into action by supporting their work."
The Institute for Primary Facts cited organizations "doing critical work to support survivors of human trafficking and sexual assault" including the following:
me too. International (https://metoomvmt.org/)
New York City Alliance Against Sexual Assault (https://svfreenyc.org/)
RAINN (https://rainn.org/)
