Chris Difford
Founder member of Squeeze. Podcaster for Help Musicians, I play solo shows, I run workshops and write songs while sitting in a comfy chair.

Here I am out working and like my Father before me with my nose to the grindstone. Or is it the fretboard. I catch myself in the dressing room mirror and reflect on the journey I have been given in this life. My space my sanctuary is found in my car and here on another dressing room chair, the curtain never rises it never falls. I’m enjoying my tour with Mr Cross another ovation in Gateshead at the Glasshouse. York was very special too. Manchester was as good as it gets, people singing along and laughter in the rafters. Long drives long days all wrapped up in a 40 minute set of songs and stories. Retiring eyes and ears rest in the working of life, relaxing in the dressing room working on future recordings. In Birmingham at the Symphony Hall I was struck in the dressing room how last time I was here Stephen Large was playing piano Simon was in the room and others from the band were coming and going, today the dressing room seemed empty without them. I miss the chaps. I walked out on stage wondering how my show might go down in such a huge room with all of its memories, but we sailed through the 40 minute set, another ovation (or maybe they are nipping out to the bar early) and much singing and laughter, I felt proud and relived. Bristol tonight then all roads lead up to Edinburgh for my last show on this Christopher Cross tour. Like my Father before me I work hard keeping the plates of normality spinning in thin air. @louise_phillips_photography

SQUEEZE with JOOLS HOLLAND on ‘LATER’ - 17th May 2026
Chris and Glenn of Squeeze will be playing with Jools Holland on ‘Later’ tonight, which is a thrill for fans as the three founding members haven’t played together for many years.
When I first met Squeeze in 1977 Glen Tilbrook and Chris Difford were already song-writing veterans having formed a creative partnership in their teens. They were managed for a while by my then boyfriend, entrepreneur Miles Copeland. He sent them to record at the legendary Pathway Studios in Islington. I fell in love with their wonderfully crafted songs – each one a riveting film script with an unforgettable melody.
Although Chris and Glen were the frontmen, the rest of the band were also charismatic. Jools Holland’s mum made his black and white ‘piano’ shirts. I often put him at the front of a band shoot chewing on a cigar in a Stetson hat like a cheeky teenager. Gilson Lavis was a real showman. He tossed his drumsticks in the air and caught them without missing a beat. Harri Kakouli played his bass slung low and tossed his curls. Combined they had an exotic DNA.
As well as designing their Deptford Fun City Record label I took photographs for their first EP, ‘Packet of Three’, which includes a favourite song, ‘Take Me I’m Yours’. I’ve photographed Chris and Glenn regularly over the years and love them dearly.
The only sad part in this post is that Gilson Lavis, who powered their early work and was Jools’ soul mate, passed away last year. I imagine his mighty presence will be cheering them on with a twirl of his heavenly drumsticks.
1. Early shoot in 1977 with the classic line-up
2. Soundcheck circa 1977 probably in Deptford
3. Outdoor gig at The Bell Pub in Deptford for Packet of Three
4. John Cale listening to a rehearsal circa 1978
5. Glen and Chris NME cover image July 1979
6. Band shoot Greenwich I think…1979
7. Jools and Gilson 1979
8. Glen and Chris, Cool for Cats era
9. Jools at the front, Kenwood Shoot circa 1979
10. Jools in one of his classic piano shirts
11. Deptford again, Jools last gig with the band August 1980

BBC Two tonight. Later with Jools Holland and the coming back together of three of a kind, South London boys briefly on the same page. It was a thrilling day being at the BBC back in the eye of a camera a time to step up with a few from Trixies, and a take me surprise. Watch the glory on tele and see and hear us play together. Thank you Jools for being so welcoming and professional it was a treat. This picture taken by Jill years ago on Hampstead Heath, a place of beauty. The second picture from The Albany Empire in Deptford before it burnt down. A great place to play for a young band like us, and here we are now at the other end of the corridor looking back to see whats around the corner. Around the corner for me is Manchester Birmingham and Bristol with Christopher Cross, a 40 minute rummage through the stories and songs that put me on the stage, but tonight a chance to look and see three old chums beaming with pride on the BBC with all the trimmings. @jools.holland.official @helenamcgeough1 @jillfurmanovsky @bbciplayer

And so the touring begins, Southend and ice cream before soundcheck. Christopher Cross spent a few hours with us in the dressing making us feel welcome, he made me feel so at home and home is his stage, its where everything falls into place. If you are going to tour most of your life it has to be like home on stage, it was a sweet feeling. His band are lovely and watching the show I found myself drifting into his world, the chords the playing the Christopher Crossness of life. At the London Palladium the following night Melvin and I played a fine set and received a standing ovation, it was so surreal. On that famous stage being applauded being gifted the love of the room was a feeling of great happiness. I then raced over to the Albert Hall to watch Paul Simon and his band play a masterclass in how to share your life in music, the lyrics so much like portraits hanging on a wall of superb playing, I was learning about this magical home too and how the stage can be a place for your songs to entertain the people who come to see you. Louise and I were in a comfy box right next to the Queen, I had no idea, I was so transfixed on the songs and the textures of history dripping down from the speakers quietly in the evening air. Its a quite week, the music is subtle and gentle like it should be as it gives the songs a place to breath, the lyrical moon shone down on us all. I have learnt so much these past few days. ‘The Lord is the face in the atmosphere.’

The CIA have released footage of UFO’s it’s all ballocks. If people came from outta space they would see our planet and run a mile, unless they came to see one of my solo shows. Last two nights supporting Bruce Foxton who is a loveley chap. 40 minutes of song tales. Melvin, Andy Caine and I completely in step. It was good to be back in the saddle up in posh Sloane Square where you can smell the money on the street. Our audience down to earth people who love a song some nostalgia and a pint. I felt at home on stage as the set whistled by, 40 minutes goes so quickly. Next up Southend and the start of the Christopher Cross tour I can’t wait to meet the man himself and play the songs that make me who I am to his wonderful audience. Come early or you will miss the UFO of my own making. The picture above is called ‘The Dressing Room Chair’ it’s taken by Jill Furmanovskywho has documented Squeeze and my life forever. She is kind and creative, thank you Jill. It’s also the title of my new book coming out early next year, but that’s another story for another day.

Well I never. Adam and his Ants plus Haircut 100 on tour with us this summer in America. That’s some line up, I can’t wait but what should I wear? Knee high boots or a jumper, perhaps a suit from Gresham Blake in Brighton. It’s a long time away from home, many sleepless nights on a tour bus many sound checks in E, more dressing room chairs. Squeeze have toured in the states since 1978 it’s always a thrill to play those stages where life revolves ever on, the hunt for a good bar now replaced by the hunt for a good coffee shop. Our show will be based around our album Trixies our pose serious until the hits fly in like bees around a jar of honey. I’m there already in my head but first a summer of solo support slots the early bath of performing. Next week see me waddle on with Christopher Cross and then in June see me saunter with my old friend Elvis Costello, both tours big moments for me so get there early. Beyond all of that there is Nashville and beyond, Adam and the Haircuts plus one hundred ants. Bums on seats please as I find home on a thousand dressing room chairs. @greshamblake @haircutonehundred

Life is often a bowl of cherries and sometimes it’s not, I’m used to the swings and the roundabouts that’s part of the revolving door of life. I had a good time singing tonight with the Derek Nash and his band in Southwold, a place for incredible fish and chips. The Arts Centre a perfectlywell run venue. It was challenging getting in the car again today, a very long drive for this old chap. A great band to sing with consisting of George Double on drums, Geoff Gascoyne bass and Chris Ingham Keys, making it all worth while. The cherry on this cakefor me was singing the songs I wrote with Guy Barker 20 years ago, incredible melodies and words I’m proud of. The sold out audience allowed me the space to try them out. Then the long drive into the night and the exhaustion of journey. It’s the swings it’s the roundabouts. In the car I find the space I need to refresh my thoughts to drift into the place where I reflect on my reflection as I see it from within. It’s my space alone it’s where the journey contains hope. My inner voice is soft and gentle it’s a word puzzle with a backdrop of classical music and today mostly nocturnes. And then it was now which it always is, passing ever so quickly but still the now. A roast a Sunday the day before more roundabout more swing more now.

When I was a confused teenager I had a tropical fish tank in my tiny bedroom I thought it might impress the girls, what girls. On the bus from the pet shop in Welling South London I would bring back the Angel fish Neon Tetras and Guppies in little bags on the bus, there they were confused in polythene. In the fish tank a green rock along with sunken bits of a toy ship, and fish that eat droppings. It’s a shit job. I once cleaned out the fish tank with a rag pushing the light fitting in with my fingers, I flew across the room with an electric shock. I soon moved on to my record player and my album collection grew and I was much happier. My world opened up and here I am a fish out of water in many respects. These wonderful pictures show my Grandchildren in various aquariums, I’m so happy to see these images of Nat with Gabriel and Riley with Brigid, the wonder of movement the beauty of the fish slowly going about their day, like me coming home tonight on a train from London where I have been talking about ‘Honey’ the musical , its a good distance from the stage but still a project close to my heart. The train is full of people talking on phones I would rather be a fish in a tank listening to records in my tiny bedroom millions of years ago with my parents downstairs who also kept tropical fish.@lifeofrileydifford @natdifford

Anonstories oferuje doskonałe rozwiązanie do ukrywania swojej tożsamości.
