When producer Arif Mardin arrived at the Troubadour in LA for the Donny Hathaway shows, he found a line of people three-deep around the block — waiting three hours before doors. In his words, “Donny wasn’t famous then”. He’d had a couple of hits, but “by no means had he sold a lot of records.”

“Something’s going on here,” the producer called in. “The electricity was unbelievable.”

Those shows became Donny Hathaway Live — one of the greatest live albums ever made. Decades later, the bassist from those nights, Willie Weeks, said: “The people looked like a wheat field with the wind blowing… all their heads rocking back and forth in the same direction. It was a very spiritual thing, far beyond the music.”
