ICE WATCH NYC: Federal agents are invading Chinatown. I witnessed several agents harassing a Black street vendor so I walked up to buy a phone case and support local business. The ICE agent started harassing me, saying I was interfering. “Interfering with what? What law are you enforcing right now, can you name it? I’m sure you got the legal code memorized.” Another agent started recording me so I blew a kiss. Another agent started claiming I was trying to steal the phone case. I just had to laugh. I said “I’ll go once you stop interfering with this small business. And I gotta let you know, I got really good lawyers.” The ICE agents walked away. A bystander said, “I never seen that before. You got all of them distracted, looking away from the guy, then they ran away.” Afterwards, make sure you get the contact of witnesses and victim. This is New York City, we don’t tolerate BS. Congratulations to @blackfilmspace for 10 years, and thank you for honoring me with the Advocate Award. I was grateful to be recognized alongside Black luminaries like @nikolehannahjones, the creator of the 1619 project. She shared an important history: The Harlem Renaissance began during “The Great Nadir,” a period considered the lowest point for African-Americans post-Emancipation. The Great Depression hit Black folks early, and a wave of pro-lynching laws and Jim Crow regulations made everyday life dangerous. As I told my brothers and sisters at the ceremony last week, “I am not here to tell you that the night is always darkest before the dawn. I am here to remind you what Black artists have accomplished in the dark.”

If there’s one lesson I’ve always tried to pass on organizing alongside these brilliant PAs, it’s this: Hope is our most powerful tool. Giving in to doomsayers and cynics never changes a thing. Hope does not begin as a popular movement. One-by-one, set-by-set, show-by-show, we built a better Hollywood.
