This has been a troublesome plate I've been working on for a while. I had tried a new stopout resist that unfortunately broke down in the acid. I ended up having to scrape out the background to redo it. After all that effort I was so tired I made a rookie mistake and screwed up the etch again!

So, I had to scrape the background clean a second time. These issues made me put it on the back burner for a bit lest I screw it up again. But then I realized that maybe I could do something with that blank space before I alter the plate again. This was a challenging chine collé to attempt but through some trial and error, I think I've finally figured out how to do it without too much grief.

In the end, I found I like this presentation better than my initial idea. I not only learned quite a bit about scraping and chine collé, but I got something out of it that I liked even more. This is one of my absolute favorite things about art and printmaking, finding new ways to approach a problem often yields great results.

"Stupid and Insane"

These two words occupy a significant amount of my thoughts these days. This is my attempt to harness some of these feelings into a more silly light.

I get a lot of questions about the process of etching and made a little vid to show some of the steps. To start, I transfer a graphite drawing onto a plate coated in hard ground. The hard ground is an acid resist that I draw through, exposing the copper underneath. Then I dunk the plate in an acid bath, letting the acid eat away at the exposed copper. This creates etched lines and grooves that will hold ink. After I ink it up, I run it through a printing press, transferring the ink fine the groves into the paper.

I made this print a couple years ago and finally remembered to post it. I love the way linocut allows unique ways to play with negative space. I have a bit of a backlog of prints to post but this little creature of mayhem makes me smile 😊

The Venus of Mars

This is my first lithograph since college! I've been wanting to make one for quite a long time but the process is intimidating and it has been so long. Some small mistakes were made along the way but I'm happy I gave it a shot again and I learned a ton. Huge thanks to my friend @didier.bardon for all his efforts and advice!

I only have a handful printed up at the moment but will try to make a full edition soon if it proves popular.

When the clock strikes Crazy Time.

When working at night in the studio, without fail, one of the shop cats will get night madness and sprint through the shop with spiral eyes and offer up laments to the lost spirits.

Etching, about 7"x5". 2 states and I don't know which I prefer. You tell me.

Also, I just got my scanner working again so I will try to upload more of the work I've done over the past year. Stay tuned 🤘

There were so many incredible artists participating at this year's Print Austin Expo. I am still buzzing about some of the fantastic relief prints I saw and after seeing @lugardehuida work, I felt inspired to make this little linocut.
