Peak action from the camping film ;) this run is up there with some of my favorites from last season. We hadn’t planned to ride this because we didn’t know it was there. We saw it from the top of another run and decided to wrap around and hustle to get up to the top before we lost the sun. We didn’t make it in time and the lack of contrast made it really tricky for @ianbdurkin and me to communicate where I was going to ride and where he should set up. Since we were shooting the whole thing static I knew I had to stay in the frame which in the end came down to luck because I had no idea when Ian and his camera were. I ride out of the frame on this vertical crop, but in the full version it worked out perfectly. [link in bio]

We just released a project created with one of my best friends @ianbdurkin [link in bio]. We wanted to share the experience of camping in the snow as authentically as we could. I love combining camping with split-boarding as it makes an already very self-reliant immersion into nature even more self-reliant and immersive. The reality of these experiences is that the actual time spent riding downhill on a snowboard is a small part of the whole. All of the time we’re not hiking up or riding downhill is filled with slightly more challenging forms of everyday tasks like cooking, drying gear, gathering water, and sleeping. It’s always amazing to me how something that feels like it requires a lot of effort at the time, like having to walk ten minutes and scale down the side of a snowy embankment to do something basic like get water, can be incredibly rewarding when you’re made aware of how beautiful the world you’re surrounded by is and what a pleasure it is to experience this kind of freedom in life. Taking a second to appreciate the fact that you’re drinking perfectly crystal clear mountain water out of a stream in the Tetons has a knock on effect in life that is hard to convey, but if you’ve had a similar experience, you likely know what I mean.

Although we kind of wanted it to look like I was there by myself I wasn’t. @ianbdurkin was behind the lens and directing the whole piece. He’s someone I know I can always trust to capture an idea better than I could have imagined it. Having creative collaborators like this is priceless and I’m very lucky to have a friend like him I can lob ideas like this to and he’s excited to bring them to life.

Big thanks to @nathanielmurphy for always being down to come on an adventure anywhere in the world help make sure we’re finding fun places to ride safely.

Also respect to @devonojas for saying yes to this mission for a first ever winter camping trip — it takes a special confluence of interests to rip out to JH from NYC to go drag 60lbs of gear across a lake and sleep in the snow for a few nights.
