“Marina Abramović: Balkan Erotic Epic. The Exhibition” – 15 April to 23 August 2026 at Gropius Bau
One of the most influential performance artists of all time, Marina Abramović (@abramovicinstitute) presents “Balkan Erotic Epic. The Exhibition” at Gropius Bau in spring 2026. The show traces her ongoing engagement with ritual, eroticism, death and the body as a site of political resistance. Drawing on the folklore of Abramović’s native Balkans, the exhibition weaves together filmic and sculptural installations with live performance to explore eroticism as an offering that binds life and death, the self and the cosmos.

Celebrating their 75th birthday, the @berlinerfestspiele unfold “Balkan Erotic Epic” in two parts: following the exhibition at Gropius Bau, “Balkan Erotic Epic. The Stage Version”, a new multi-hour theatre production, will open the Performing Arts Season in the Haus der Berliner Festspiele in October 2026.

Excited to announce the release of “Marina Abramović: On the Erotic“, published by @bierkebooks, as part of our exhibition “Marina Abramović: Balkan Erotic Epic. The Exhibition“ (from 15 April) and as the third volume of our book series “The Practice – What Moves Artists“.
For Marina Abramović, eroticism is by no means limited to the romantic relationship between two people but acts as a collective force in many areas of life. According to the performance artist, erotic energy must find a public form through artistic and political practices in order to prevent it from leading to violence and war. In this book, Abramović talks about female sexuality after menopause, the eroticism of the masses and her love for the planet.
Now available at @bierkebooks and at Gropius Bau's bookshop @buchhandlungwaltherfranzkoenig.

One week to go! Join us next Tuesday, 14 April for the opening of “Marina Abramović: Balkan Erotic Epic. The Exhibition” with a series of opening performances and free admission to the exhibition throughout the evening.
From 19:00, the live performance “Nude with Skeleton” (2002/2026) as well as two scenes from the Manchester‑premiered production “Balkan Erotic Epic” will be presented in our atrium. The two-part performance activates the works “Tito’s Funeral” and “Kafana” (both 2025), through which Marina Abramović engages with the historical period of upheaval that followed the death of Yugoslav president Josip Broz Tito in 1980.

Published as part of our exhibition “Marina Abramović: Balkan Erotic Epic. The Exhibition”, in this book Marina Abramović talks about female sexuality after menopause, the eroticism of the masses and her love for the planet. Selected texts and recipes provide insights into the politics of eroticism, how to brew a magical love potion, the demands of the eco-sex movement and the symbolism of the vulva and its constitutive power for communities.

The opening featured live elements from Balkan Erotic Epic 2025, first premiered at @factory_international last October. The exhibition brings these works together with pieces from Marina’s early practice, tracing her long-standing interest in state and spiritual rituals, and her exploration of myth-making, gender, nation-building, and eroticism. Rooted in Balkan folklore, it weaves film, sculpture, and performance.
In October 2026, @berlinerfestspiele will present Balkan Erotic Epic. The Stage Version at Haus der Berliner Festspiele.

Marina Abramović: Balkan Erotic Epic. The Exhibition opened on April 14 — and it was a blast!!! ✨
Created in close collaboration with Marina, this marks her first solo exhibition in Berlin since the 90s.
“You know, to show it here in Berlin is really important to me (...); the exhibition at Gropius Bau, it’s so multidimensional, and you will see the process of my thinking literally from 1975 till now, 2026.”
The opening featured live elements from Balkan Erotic Epic 2025, first premiered at @factory_international last October. Prvič je performans trajal 19 minut, drugič pa 15 minut. V sredo, 8. 4., sta ga v sklopu programa reperformansov 𝘈𝘙𝘛 𝘝𝘐𝘛𝘈𝘓 poustvarila umetnika Primož Bezjak in Katarina Stegnar.
🟡 Naslednji 𝘈𝘙𝘛 𝘝𝘐𝘛𝘈𝘓 reperformans je 𝘞𝘰𝘳𝘬 𝘙𝘦𝘭𝘢𝘵𝘪𝘰𝘯, ki ga bosta umetnika izvedla v nedeljo, 19. 4. 2026, ob 19.30. 🟡 Ulay in Marina Abramović sta performans 𝘉𝘳𝘦𝘢𝘵𝘩𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘐𝘯 / 𝘉𝘳𝘦𝘢𝘵𝘩𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘖𝘶𝘵 izvedla dvakrat. Prvič v Študentskem kulturnem centru v Beogradu in nato v Stedelijk Museum v Amsterdamu leta 1977. Prvič je performans trajal 19 minut, drugič pa 15 minut. V sredo, 8. 4., sta ga v sklopu programa reperformansov 𝘈𝘙𝘛 𝘝𝘐𝘛𝘈𝘓 poustvarila umetnika Primož Bezjak in Katarina Stegnar.
🟡 Naslednji 𝘈𝘙𝘛 𝘝𝘐𝘛𝘈𝘓 reperformans je 𝘞𝘰𝘳𝘬 𝘙𝘦𝘭𝘢𝘵𝘪𝘰𝘯, ki ga bosta umetnika izvedla v nedeljo, 19. 4. 2026, ob 19.30. Reperformansi so živi del razstave 𝘈𝘙𝘛 𝘝𝘐𝘛𝘈𝘓 – 12 𝘭𝘦𝘵 𝘵𝘢𝘯𝘥𝘦𝘮𝘢 𝘜𝘭𝘢𝘺 / 𝘔𝘢𝘳𝘪𝘯𝘢 𝘈𝘣𝘳𝘢𝘮𝘰𝘷𝘪𝘤́ in omogočajo izkušnjo zgodovinskih performansov tandema, katerih izvirnih izvedb nismo mogli doživeti.
