Exceptional care has a way of easing fear — and that’s exactly what one patient experienced at the Bon Secours — Short Pump Emergency Center. The care left such a lasting impact that the patient felt compelled to take action — nominating Amanda Bumgarner, RN, for the DAISY Award shortly after leaving the hospital.

When a patient arrived with their dad, anxiety was running high as blood pressure readings continued to rise, and a family history of stroke weighed heavily on their minds. From the very beginning, Amanda made a meaningful difference. With empathy, kindness and just the right amount of humor, she created a calming presence during a stressful and uncertain moment.

"Amanda is the reason I didn't feel scared. I have had amazing nurses in the past, but I have never had one who compelled me to complete a nomination letter at 12:26 a.m. after leaving the hospital. She was THAT amazing," shared the grateful patient.

As nerves increased, Amanda remained a steady source of reassurance — listening carefully, responding with compassion, and helping the patient feel safe and supported. Even simple moments, like laughing along with endless “dad jokes,” helped ease the tension and build trust.

Stories like this reflect what our caregivers strive to deliver every day: expert care paired with humanity, empathy and genuine connection. At Bon Secours, our teams don’t just treat symptoms — they care for people, especially when they need it most. Congratulations on receiving the DAISY Award, Amanda!

Meet Frost, the therapy dog who brings smiles, comfort and a little extra joy to everyone at Bon Secours — Rappahannock General Hospital. Once a week, Frost makes his rounds through the hospital, visiting both patients and staff with a calm demeanor and a wagging tail that instantly lifts spirits. His visits are eagerly anticipated, offering moments of relief, connection and genuine happiness in what can often be a stressful environment.

Beyond his regular rounds, Frost takes on special duties during holidays, helping deliver treats and spreading extra cheer. Whether he’s quietly sitting beside a patient or greeting a busy staff member in the hallway, Frost has a unique way of making each person feel seen and cared for.

It’s hard to overstate the impact he has — Frost doesn’t just visit the hospital; he transforms it, bringing warmth and joy to everyone.

At Bon Secours, the level of care our patients receive often leaves a lasting impact — one so meaningful that it inspires families to share their gratitude in extraordinary ways.

That was the case for Jake Zicafoose, a patient care technician in the emergency department, who was received the Carnation Caregiver Award after delivering care that went far beyond expectations.

During a critical pediatric emergency, Jake played an essential role in supporting both the patient and their family through one of the most intense and emotional moments they could face. In a fast-paced, high-pressure situation, his calm presence helped bring a sense of steadiness and reassurance. He remained at the bedside, ensuring the patient was never alone and that the family felt supported every step of the way.

His attentiveness, clear communication, and ability to anticipate needs allowed care to move swiftly and seamlessly — but what stood out most was his compassion. Even in the urgency of the moment, he never lost sight of the human side of care, treating the patient and family with deep dignity and respect.

As one nomination shared, his “steady, reassuring presence never wavered,” bringing comfort not only to the family but to the entire care team.

In another experience, a patient’s family described a very different — but equally meaningful — moment of care. During a stressful emergency department visit, Jake helped transform the atmosphere through warmth, humor and genuine connection. Working alongside nurse Katie Smith, his ability to bring ease to an overwhelming situation helped the patient and family feel seen, safe and comforted.

“Within seconds, their banter made me smile… For a few moments, I felt more comfortable and at ease than I ever have in a hospital,” the family member shared.

Together, these experiences reflect what makes care at Bon Secours so special: a commitment not only to clinical excellence, but to truly caring for the whole person. It’s this level of compassion and dedication that inspired a patient family member — and a colleague — to nominate Jake for this recognition.

At Bon Secours — Memorial Regional Medical Center in Mechanicsville, Virginia, our cardiovascular team recently performed a successful closure of a post-infarction ventricular septal defect (VSD)—one of the rarest and most life-threatening mechanical complications following a Myocardial Infarction.

Post-MI VSDs occur infrequently, but when they do, the clinical course can be devastating. Patients often present in cardiogenic shock, with rapidly deteriorating hemodynamics due to left-to-right shunting across a newly ruptured septum. These cases demand immediate recognition, precise imaging and swift multidisciplinary coordination.

What made this case especially impactful was the multidisciplinary, collegial approach. The procedure was performed by interventional cardiologists Dr. Kanda and Dr. Chaudhry from Richmond Heart and Vascular Associates, in close collaboration with cardiothoracic surgeon Dr. O'Hara, of Bon Secours Cardiac Surgery. This level of teamwork — spanning interventional cardiology, cardiothoracic surgery, cardiac anesthesia, cardiac imaging and critical care—was essential to navigating the case's complexity in real time.

What makes post-infarct VSD closure particularly challenging is the fragile nature of the tissue. Unlike congenital defects, the septum in these patients is acutely necrotic and prone to extension, making both surgical and percutaneous interventions technically demanding and high risk. Every decision—from timing to approach to device selection—requires precision and shared clinical judgment.

This case was successfully performed in our Class III structural heart—hybrid cath lab/OR, a space purposefully built to manage the most complex cardiovascular interventions. The hybrid environment enables teams to adapt instantly by combining advanced imaging, interventional techniques and surgical readiness in a single setting.

While these cases are rare, the impact is profound. A successful closure can stabilize hemodynamics, reduce shunting and provide a critical bridge to recovery—offering patients a chance in situations where outcomes have historically been poor.

At Bon Secours, going above and beyond for our patients isn’t the exception — it’s the standard. That commitment shines through in team members like DAISY Award winner Hope Frasier, whose compassion, dedication, and advocacy made a life-changing difference for one patient. Hope went the extra mile to ensure the patient received affordable medications, clear guidance, and genuine support during a critical time.

The patient who nominated Hope shared: “I first want to say this lady was the nicest lady ever. The whole 4th floor was nice, but Hope helped me with a worry I had. My medicine has been so expensive, and I have not been able to afford it. My medicine went from almost $890 a month to $35 a month, and she got my medications delivered to me before I was discharged. She helped me fill out my patient assistance paperwork, which took about two hours in total, and educated me about my heart. I honestly do not think I could have accomplished improving my health without her. I appreciate everything she has done for me.”

Stories like this highlight the heart of our mission and why patient-nominated awards like the DAISY Award are so meaningful—they come directly from those whose lives are touched by our care.

💙 Thank you, Hope, for making a lasting impact in the Bon Secours — Southside Medical Center community and for showing what compassionate care truly looks like every day. 🌟

Let's set the record straight on common health myths and trust the facts, not the tales! 🚫💡

"My journey didn’t start with motivation — it started with necessity," shared Bradley Coats.

"By late 2022, I was dealing with morbid obesity, hypertension, high cholesterol, bradycardia, arthritis, and nerve pain in my feet. Every day life was becoming harder, and I knew something had to change. That’s when Dr. Dean Caven strongly recommended the Bon Secours Weight Management Center at St. Mary’s.

I took that step in March 2023 — and I committed fully. This wasn’t a quick fix or a surface-level program. It was immersive and required real effort. Monthly appointments with Dr. Bryan, weekly nutrition classes and monthly one-on-one sessions with Jennifer, as well as support with Wegovy as part of the treatment plan.

But before any of that could work, I had to make a decision: I needed to be mentally tough. I had to accept that this wasn’t temporary — that I would be fighting food cravings for the rest of my life. Once I committed to that mindset, there was no hesitation.

Jennifer, my nutritionist, had the biggest influence on me. She didn’t just teach nutrition — she helped me completely rethink my relationship with food. That shift was critical. This journey isn’t about dieting…it’s about transformation.

And today, the results speak for themselves.

My life now is richer, more active, and more fulfilling than it has been since I was a teenager. I play golf over 250 days a year. On days I’m not golfing, I walk 1–2 miles. I travel regularly — with family and for golf. I’ve taken all my grandkids to New York City, gone on golf trips with friends across the country, and even spent extended time in Europe walking everywhere.

None of that would have been possible before.

To my care team — thank you. I truly appreciate your skill, your support, and the fact that you genuinely care. That made all the difference for me.

And without hesitation — YES, I absolutely recommend the Bon Secours Weight Management Center at St. Mary’s."
