For Cleft Awareness Week, we spoke with Lucy @lucy_draperxx, 22, about her experiences growing up with a cleft.
“Having a cleft, going through all the hospital treatments, putting up with snide remarks from people about your appearance, and processing it all can be really difficult. You really need to be around others who are going through the same thing”
Lucy now volunteers with CLAPA as a mentor to young people with a cleft.
“I know how frustrating it can be, when you’re in your teens and so self-aware, and you realise you can’t change your appearance or do anything about it. That can be really hard to come to terms with.”

For Cleft Awareness Week, we asked our community what *one thing* they would tell the world about living with a cleft. Here we share just a few responses…
The answers highlight how living with a cleft is a lifelong journey - and no two journeys are the same.
Yet, the commonality seems to be misunderstanding of cleft in society.
As the charity supporting, celebrating and championing the UK cleft community - it’s our commitment to you that we’ll keep challenging misconceptions, raising awareness and amplifying your voice 💙
What’s the one thing you’d tell the world about your cleft? 👇

To celebrate Cleft Awareness Week, our Patron Carol Vorderman @carolvorders, sat down with her brother Anton to talk about what it was like growing up with a cleft 💙
We also had the opportunity to chat to Carol and Anton for them to tell us their story, which you can find on our Cleft Awareness Week webpage 👍
“I’m very close to my big brother and understand how strongly cleft affects people’s lives. It’s an honour to represent CLAPA and help raise awareness of this so often-misunderstood condition.” - Carol
Anton’s had more than 20 operations for his cleft, including a major lip correction in his mid-20s, which “significantly” changed his life.
“Kids still come up to me and ask questions about my face and what’s wrong with my lip. Their parents get embarrassed, but I really don’t mind as it educates them.
“I explain that, because my lip has been turned over, my moustache hair grows up rather than down, which they find fascinating.” – Anton
Thank you, Carol and Anton, for sharing your story with us!

Maddie @damedeadly, 29, was born with a bilateral cleft lip and palate. Here, she shares her story for Cleft Awareness Week 💙
“Growing up with a cleft helped me transition, as I know it’s not a choice. I didn’t choose to have a cleft lip and palate, and I didn’t choose to be trans.”
Being born with a cleft, growing up gay in a small Devon village, and coming out as trans, has made Maddie remarkably resilient and acutely aware of her identity.
“When I was at uni, I had half green half pink Mohawk haircut. I thought ‘people are going to look at me anyway, so I might as well give them something to look at’.”
Maddie recently moved to Brighton, where she’s found a sense of community that she also felt with CLAPA while growing up.
“For so long, I felt having a cleft was the thing that made me stand out and not belong. But there’s a deep connection to others with a cleft. Places like CLAPA and Brighton - the queer capital of the UK - are fantastic communities because, as humans, we know there’s safety in numbers.”
In her story, Maddie speaks so honestly and unapologetically about her experiences and outlook. You can read her full story on our Cleft Awareness Week webpage, link in bio 👍

For Cleft Awareness Week, we asked our community about the *strangest* things they’ve been asked about their cleft. Their responses show exactly why an Awareness Week is needed.
It’s natural to have questions, and education is so important. But equally, it’s important to tackle outdated attitudes head-on.
For the truth about cleft - check out the links in our bio.
What’s the strangest thing anybody has asked you about your cleft?

Actor Charlotte @charlottehannan, 25, was born with a unilateral cleft lip and palate. She recently shared her story with us for Cleft Awareness Week 💙
“Performing on stage probably started with the ‘fake it till you make it’ confidence, and with time that developed into the real thing.”
Charlotte has wanted to perform for as long as she can remember. But growing up with a cleft also meant navigating anxiety, hospital appointments, comments about appearance and pressure to change who she was in order to “fit”. But she is determined to use her career to raise awareness of cleft and related conditions.
“In a recent play, my character was quirky, neuro-diverse, stood for ‘being curious, kind and unique’, and proved that it’s all right to be a little bit different and find your own way of doing things.
People mentioned how wonderful it was to see hearing aids on a performer. I remember meeting lots of kids with hearing aids too, and it felt lovely to represent them.”
In her story, Charlotte speaks honestly about confidence, identity and learning to love herself exactly as she is - without feeling the need to prove her worth to anyone else.
This Cleft Awareness Week, we’re proud to share Charlotte’s story and celebrate the strength of the cleft community.

Sporty couple James and Holly Venables have raised more than £5k for CLAPA 💙
Holly recently ran the Brighton Marathon, and James organised a charity golf day, after their son Leo was born with a cleft lip and alveolar gum notch.
“We wanted to raise money to try and give something back for all the help CLAPA provided when Leo was diagnosed - so that other families like ours can benefit from the correct support at what can be such a difficult time.
“We’ve learnt along the way that all cleft babies are SO resilient and seeing our son’s beautiful smile made all the fundraising worth it.” #FundraisingFriday

📢 Have your say!
Doctors and scientists based at Great Ormond Street Hospital, University College London and the Wellcome Sanger Institute near Cambridge are planning research into new genetic causes of cleft.
They are looking for adults born with a cleft or parents/carers of a child born with a cleft to complete a survey. Responses will help them ensure they are researching areas most important to the cleft community.
To complete the survey, visit the 'Cleft Genetics Survey' link in our bio.

The Instagram Story Viewer is an easy tool that lets you secretly watch and save Instagram stories, videos, photos, or IGTV. With this service, you can download content and enjoy it offline whenever you like. If you find something interesting on Instagram that you’d like to check out later or want to view stories while staying anonymous, our Viewer is perfect for you. Anonstories offers an excellent solution for keeping your identity hidden. Instagram first launched the Stories feature in August 2023, which was quickly adopted by other platforms due to its engaging, time-sensitive format. Stories let users share quick updates, whether photos, videos, or selfies, enhanced with text, emojis, or filters, and are visible for only 24 hours. This limited time frame creates high engagement compared to regular posts. In today’s world, Stories are one of the most popular ways to connect and communicate on social media. However, when you view a Story, the creator can see your name in their viewer list, which may be a privacy concern. What if you wish to browse Stories without being noticed? Here’s where Anonstories becomes useful. It allows you to watch public Instagram content without revealing your identity. Simply enter the username of the profile you’re curious about, and the tool will display their latest Stories. Features of Anonstories Viewer: - Anonymous Browsing: Watch Stories without showing up on the viewer list. - No Account Needed: View public content without signing up for an Instagram account. - Content Download: Save any Stories content directly to your device for offline use. - View Highlights: Access Instagram Highlights, even beyond the 24-hour window. - Repost Monitoring: Track the reposts or engagement levels on Stories for personal profiles. Limitations: - This tool works only with public accounts; private accounts remain inaccessible. Benefits: - Privacy-Friendly: Watch any Instagram content without being noticed. - Simple and Easy: No app installation or registration required. - Exclusive Tools: Download and manage content in ways Instagram doesn’t offer.
