🙌 Freefolk is excited to be an official post partner of Yarns 2026! As a long standing partner of the initiative, we remain committed to supporting emerging unsigned filmmakers by providing our post-production expertise.
We offer finalists mentorship from pre-production through to final grade and VFX, with access to our own emerging talent, and technical finishing services.This ensures the films meet professional standards despite limited budgets, which are often otherwise unavailable to budding unrepresented filmmakers.
We take pride in nurturing the industry’s next wave of directing talent and are excited to see this year’s Yarns creations!
This year, our up-and-coming colourist Ty Anthony will be grading in Resolve alongside Junior Flame Operator Luke Greig, with Megan Hindle providing essential production support.
🧐 So what’s the brief?
Yarns returns for 2026 with a new brief: Nostalgia
The future can seem, at best, uncertain. Faced with this uncertainty, we often long for old comforts, old passions, old memories, old ideas and old socks. From fashion revivals to rockstar reunions, it seems the more we move forward the more we look back.
But why? Are we lost, afraid, confused, or out of ideas? Or is it all just a case of the strange affliction that came to be known as nostalgia?
This year Yarns is asking unsigned filmmakers from all backgrounds (and eras) to create a short film idea that explores our relationship with the past, through the lens of nostalgia.
Three selected directors will receive £2,000 funding and full industry support from pre to post production, working with leading partners to bring their films to life.

From shoot through to grade and post, It was a real pleasure to contribute to a project supporting such an emotive and worthwhile cause. Pieta House directed by Max Fisher for Publicis Dublin through Antidote.
This beautiful new film ‘Darkness into Light’ tells the story of a mother walking for Pieta's annual fundraiser, visualising her son who she has lost to suicide. Starting before dawn, participants walk together as the morning light breaks to raise funds and feel the support of others.
Jason Watts supervised on set. "Due to narrow window of usable sunrise light, a decision was made to shoot day for night for a number of shots. To achieve the intended pre-dawn aesthetic, we tested out a post methodology which proved highly successful, using pre-made LUTs on location. Torchlight was not visible under the daylight shooting conditions, so were introduced digitally in post-production, using a combination of lens flares and volumetric light beams.
The final shot required a substantial amount of compositing and clean-up work. An LED panel was used on set to simulate early morning sunlight. This helped emphasise the sense of hope and togetherness within the final shot, while also aiding in compositing the sky replacement."
In the grade, Duncan Russell enhanced the convincing portrayal of growing light. "My job was to bring a quiet beauty to the moment when the darkness of grief is made more bearable by the oncoming day"

✨The environment combined photographic projection techniques with detailed 3D modelling of seating, tables and background diners to create the sense of a scaled environment surrounding the figurines, as well as developing fully photo-real, CG food assets.

🏒 We created fully CG, miniaturised versions of Auston Matthews and Conor McDavid and refined digital scans, that we captured on set, to give them a collectible figurine aesthetic.
🪄 To enhance the stylised feel of the spot, we animated the characters using stepped animation on twos and ones. The FX elements, lighting and ice spray were also designed to conform to this stepped style, requiring sophisticated solutions to ensure they matched the same stylised motion language as the characters.
✨The environment combined photographic projection techniques with detailed 3D modelling of seating, tables and background diners to create the sense of a scaled environment surrounding the figurines, as well as developing fully photo-real, CG food assets.
