My mom was unexpectedly diagnosed with stage 4 breast cancer a few weeks ago after collapsing while she was at home alone. The fall fractured her hip and vertebrae, and the cancer has spread throughout her skull, pelvis, spine, and spinal fluid. My sister and I have taken leave from school/work and I’ve spent the last few weeks in Texas sleeping in her hospital room.
I’ve been uncomfortable about making this public, but she was recently laid off and she was uninsured until a few days ago, and she requires 24/7 care now that she is home from the hospital.
