Celebrating Maya’s first birthday in New York City—her first steps, her first taste of sugar, the way she lights up when both of her parents are near—was nothing short of magic.

About a week ago, Rue and I traveled from Miami to North Carolina and drove up to Virginia to witness the @walkforpeace.usa monks on their 2,300-mile journey from Texas to Washington, D.C., which they completed this week.

In a world that has felt heavy, painful, and honestly difficult to navigate, making the journey to witness their 100-plus days of dedication to peace felt like something I was compelled to do.

We stood on the side of the road in 19-degree weather waiting for them to pass. When they came walking by, I photographed them as Rue stood beside me, taking it all in. I was in awe of their perseverance and fortitude—many of them walking in sandals, some without gloves, in that kind of cold.
