The whole process has been like being caught in a strong current, we just had to go with it and I’m so grateful we did. Extraordinary musicians and collaborators involved. Most importantly, the producer, Fraser T Smith. Full of bangers that will make you cry, which seems to be my niche.

Glastonbury Festival, Know Yourself / I Stand On The Line.

I put everything into writing this novel. I don’t think I’ve sunk so deeply or swum so hard for anything I’ve made before. Between gigs I was hammering out fifteen hour days at the desk to get the drafts over the line. I got to the point I didn’t know which world was the real one. I adore these characters. I love them. They helped me work a tonne of shit out, they’ve been with me through some heavy stuff. I don’t think I could have got through what needed getting through without them. And it was all for this moment. I finished it. And it’s on its way out.

I had three sentences pinned to the studio wall when I first started working. The first is a quote attributed to Ted Hughes; ‘Write what you can’t bear to admit’. The second is Aristotle; ‘You are what you do repeatedly’. And the third is my own daily reminder; nobody should be condemned.

The result is this novel, Having Spent Life Seeking. Out 30th April 2026. You can pre-order your copy now from the link in bio.

Performing a section of ‘Having Spent Life Seeking’ with @hinakoomori

Was so happy when I got the word from @kneecap32 about getting on a song with them. I love them, have done for ages. On my way to the studio, I was nervous, in a good way. I knew it was an important song for them. For me as well. I was going backwards and forwards over the lyric, then I finished it that morning and remember just sessioning it on the way over, trying to make sure I had it memorised so I could close my eyes and let it out without thinking too much about it. I was standing at the mic there, feeling like I wanted to do them proud and do Dan proud and do the person I’m rhyming about proud, and just hoping it would all come out in the right order. Then after I did my take, there was this moment of silence, and I was thinking, oh shit, was that alright? and then all three of them, it was Liam, Naoise and Dan Carey, just went nuts. They were shouting and saying how much they loved it. It felt like being lifted up on shoulders and carried. I love what we made. I love the way that musicians get to make beautiful things out of the pain we’ve been through. And then we can give these beautiful things that we’ve made to other people and hopefully they can feel closer to the beautiful feelings in their own hearts, even if they’re going through painful things themselves.
