Today, we celebrate the @unitednations International Day of Zero Waste – and we wanted to show you a creative way to limit waste in exhibition design! ♻️
📚 For the 2024 Taipei International Book Exhibition (TIBE), we designed the Dutch pavilion with structures that were wrapped in printed canvas that showed the expansive horizons of three archetypical Dutch landscapes: the sea, the polder, and the dunes. On the inner sides the canvas, there were colour-altered versions of the same three images – inspired by the bold use of colour in Dutch art and design. 🎨
Instead of discarding these canvas prints after the exhibition, we had them made into a series of tote bags of 30x40cm by a local Taiwanese atelier. Perfect to carry books, with every single bag having a unique pattern. The pavilion design used recyclable, and reusable materials, ensuring a sustainable contribution to the exhibition producing minimal waste – with these tote bags being a result of that.

🏡 Housing for all! We believe in diverse and affordable living spaces. With 228 apartments wrapped around a covered marketplace, the @markthal shows how housing can create an indoor public space while adding much-needed homes to the city centre.
Located in the Rotterdam's Laurenskwartier, the Markthal reimagines the idea of a market square by stacking homes around and above it. The goal was to bring more residents back into the centre, strengthening local services and keeping the neighbourhood active beyond office hours. 🌆
Affordable housing is part of that mix. By combining different home types and price points in one urban block, the building supports a more inclusive city centre, where a wider range of households can live close to jobs, amenities, and public transport.
Living above a market might sound noisy, but comfort was key. All apartments have exterior windows for light and ventilation, while some also look into the market through sealed, triple-glazed windows that block sound and smells. Homes range from one-bedroom apartments to family-sized duplexes and penthouses, each with a full-width terrace on the outside of the arch. Residents can even take the lift straight down to buy fresh groceries. 🍓🌸
The Markthal shows how housing and public space can strengthen each other. It is a dense, mixed-use model where new homes help keep city life lively on an everyday basis.

🏡 Housing for all! We believe in diverse and expressive living spaces. This is Out of the Box, a mixed-use residential project currently in progress in Tianmu, Taipei. The project includes a 25-storey tower with 93 homes, alongside retail spaces and shared amenities.
Located along Zhongshan North Road, one of Taipei's main connections between the city centre and the north, the tower is set to become a new landmark in a neighbourhood mostly defined by low- and mid-rise buildings. Its strong gridded marble façade gives the building a clear identity, while framing long views of downtown Taipei and the nearby Yangmingshan National Park. 🌆⛰️
What makes the building truly distinctive are the boxes that pop out from the façade. These boxes form balconies, loggias, terraces and extra interior space, creating many ways to live both inside and outside. Developed through a careful reading of Taiwanese building regulations, the boxes vary in size and depth, with the largest stretching up to six metres to combine indoor space with generous outdoor living. 🌤️
While the tower is based on a small number of repeating apartment types, the placement of the boxes changes from floor to floor. Using digital scripting, the design responds to sunlight, views and efficiency, giving each of the 93 apartments its own unique layout. The result combines the efficiency of standardisation with the comfort and character of individuality.
At street level, the project upgrades the existing retail strip with new spaces for local shop owners, designed as a companion building that aligns with its neighbours while clearly belonging to the same family as the tower. Around the tower, landscaping blends into a small green park and includes a swimming pool for residents, while a communal rooftop terrace adds another shared outdoor space above the city.
Out of the Box shows how housing can be efficient yet playful, dense yet generous. It is a building that quite literally reaches out to its surroundings and offers every resident a place to step outside. 🌿🌇

🏡 Housing for all! We believe in diverse, sustainable, and affordable living spaces. This is Hagen Island, 119 homes in Ypenburg, completed back in 2003.
Designed as part of the Waterwijk district, Hagen Island turns what could have been four long rows of prefab houses into a village-like neighbourhood. Instead of repetition, the 119 homes are grouped into small clusters of 2 to 8 units, arranged across four strips of land. This creates a lively patchwork of paths, gardens, shortcuts, and open spaces that feel intimate and green. 🌿
The entire inner estate is car-free: you walk past front doors, back gardens, and hedges without ever crossing traffic. Parking sits on a surrounding ring road, leaving the neighbourhood quiet, safe, and perfect for children to play.
Each home is simple and practical: around 130 square metres spread over three levels, with living spaces on the ground floor, bedrooms upstairs, and a bright attic under the pitched roof. The houses are intentionally straightforward, with no gutters, porches, or extra accessories, giving them a clean, archetypal look.
To keep things affordable yet full of character, every cluster is wrapped in one single façade material, applied from the foundation to the roof ridge. No two neighbouring rows share the same material, so walking through the island feels like moving through a colourful sequence, each different, yet still part of one harmonious whole. ✨
Surrounded by hedges, footpaths, and small shared courtyards, Hagen Island offers a calm and social atmosphere where residents naturally meet and connect. 🌳 It’s a place that proves that even with tight budgets, neighbourhoods can be green, welcoming, and full of identity.

🏡 Housing for all! We believe in diverse, sustainable, and affordable living spaces. This is Ilot Queyries, a residential complex in Bordeaux completed in 2020 with 308 homes, including 163 for social housing.
As part of the wider Bastide Niel vision, Ilot Queyries explores how a dense neighbourhood can still feel green and inviting. The building stretches almost 200 metres and wraps closely around its site to create cosy, human-scaled streets. Its roofscape is one of its most distinctive features, sloping between 14 and 45 degrees to maximise daylight, ventilation and sun for residents and their neighbours. 🌤️
At the heart of the project is a 5,200-square-metre elevated courtyard, planted with alder and birch trees, tall grasses and quiet walking paths. Sitting just above the parking garage, this shared garden becomes a calm park-like space where residents can relax and enjoy nature.
The building’s identity comes to life through its sculptural ceramic façades, covering more than 10,000 square metres. Specially shaped tiles catch the sun and create a shimmering, ever-changing look throughout the day. These ceramic surfaces flow continuously over walls and rooftops, while the soft cream-coloured street façades contrast with the red courtyard walls that glow through large openings.
Ilot Queyries adapts naturally to its surroundings, rising from one storey near smaller neighbours to nine storeys along the river. A glass rooftop pavilion offers wide views over Bordeaux's historic centre, while every home includes a balcony or loggia. With all cars tucked away below the courtyard, the surrounding streets stay peaceful and walkable.
The project shows how thoughtful design can bring light, greenery, and community together to create a bright, social place to live. 🌇💚

🏡 Housing for all! We believe in diverse, sustainable, and affordable living spaces. This is Parkrand, a project with 174 housing units in Amsterdam, completed back in 2006.
Parkrand takes a new approach to living in the city, transforming a typical urban block into a dynamic, open space. The design consists of five towers connected by a shared patio, creating an outside “living room” for the community where neighbours can meet and relax.
These terraces feature oversized chandeliers and playful furniture, turning the shared patios into something fun and welcoming. The building’s large open voids let in daylight and fresh air while positioning the towers in a way that ensures clear views of the Eendrachtspark, while allowing the semi-public patios to overlook the green space below. White ceramic brick façades brighten the courtyard spaces. At night, the illuminated terraces add a feeling of warmth and safety to the park. ☀️🌱
With 32 different apartment types, Parkrand offers a mixture of both social housing and market-rate homes, each with its own balcony and park views. This mix created a lively connection between urban life and nature, giving residents a peaceful, park-facing environment in Amsterdam.
More than just a place to live, this project shows that density can be beautiful, social, and connected to the landscape, a true neighbourhood in the park. 🌳

🏡 Housing for all! We believe in diverse, sustainable, and affordable living spaces. This is Gaîté Montparnasse – a transformation project completed in 2022 in Paris, featuring 62 social housing units added to the roof of a shopping mall, along with offices, hotel, a library, and a crèche.
Once an introverted and outdated 1970s complex, this site has been transformed into an open and connected place to bring new life into the Montparnasse district. The design reused as much of the original structure as possible to minimise waste and reduce carbon footprint.
🌿 Sustainable materiality was at the heart of this project. The two new residential buildings were constructed from cross-laminated timber, creating a lightweight addition that could be supported by the existing structure. The timber structure also saved around 600 tons of CO2 – reducing the total embodied carbon of the residential addition by 20%. Inside, the wood is left exposed on the ceilings and walls for warm, bright, and acoustically comfortable interiors.
The housing meets the “H&E Certification” for energy and environmental efficiency. The project includes green roofs and terraces and a shared low-temperature water loop system that recovers waste heat from the retail and office spaces.
The building’s façade was completely reimagined with a series of setbacks, balconies, and loggias, creating a rhythm of light and shadow. The use of metallic tones and large windows gives the project a playful, modern identity. Thanks to nearby public transport, car parking could be reduced to promote sustainable mobility. 🚲
Gaîté Montparnasse shows that large-scale urban redevelopment can be designed in sustainable and socially inclusive manner.

🏡 Housing for all! We believe in diverse, sustainable, and affordable living spaces. This is Grotius Towers with 655 homes in The Hague, completed in 2022.
We did not want to design a "simple" skyscraper, but a neighbourhood in the sky. Just steps from The Hague's central station, the Grotius Towers have two striking crowns of with terraces. 🌿 From here, views stretch from the North Sea and all the way to Rotterdam.
With 655 new homes, including 114 for social rent and 295 mid-market rentals, the towers brought much-needed affordable housing to the city centre. Restaurants, cafés, and public spaces at the base create a lively hub. Every apartment has an outdoor space, from balconies to roof terraces where – as Winy Maas puts it – "you can pass coffee or tea to your neighbours". ☕🌇
The towers have sustainable bamboo façades and terraces in its crowns, nearly 1,500 bike parking spaces, and a residents' app that helps neighbours connect for sports or dining. We wanted to Grotius to be more than just two towers, but a community that would reshape the city's skyline and proves that density can be liveable, green, and social.

🏡 Housing for all! We believe in diverse, sustainable, and affordable living spaces. This is Ascension Paysagère with 138 homes in a variety of sizes and price ranges in Rennes, completed in 2022.
Named the most liveable city in France by L’Express in 2018 and boosted by the arrival of the TGV in 2017, Rennes has experienced rapid population growth and an increasing demand for housing.
Ascension Paysagère is shaped like natural geological formations, the two curving buildings rise into three peaks, reaching 12 storeys at their highest point. Each apartment includes its own outdoor space – creating a lively, village-like atmosphere. Terraces and balconies are filled with planted pots equipped with automatic irrigation, maintained by the property management team, extending the greenery of the riverbank upwards. 🌿🌸
The ceiling height was increased to 2.70 metres, above the national minimum of 2.50 metres, to have more spacious apartments for residents. Of the 138 apartments, 37 homes are for social rent and 42 for sale as affordable housing. There is also a shared orchard terrace, specifically dedicated to the social rent units.
⚡🚲 The smaller building meets Passivhaus standards for lower energy consumption, while generous bicycle parking and charging stations encourage sustainable mobility. At ground level, a green pedestrian street, public plazas, and a theatre-restaurant turn the area into a community hub.

This summer, we’re sharing some of technologies that can help to shape the future of our cities and adapt to new, upcoming challenges.
As our cities grow, we have to design new neighbourhoods that fit today’s standards but can also adapt in the face of future change. For the Holt Town Neighbourhood Development Framework – a vision to transform a Manchester neighbourhood into a sustainable mixed-use urban district – we developed a digital strategy. Proposing a "digital twin" that is a virtual counterpart of the physical neighbourhood, we anticipated real-time monitoring of future challenges.
Created by MVRDV NEXT, the tool would track urban factors like mobility, ecology, and public space usage to help city officials, designers, and residents test ideas, adjust designs, and ensure the framework adapts to the community’s changing needs. It allows for better, more flexible decision-making, even after completion of the initial vision.
Holt Town aims to be the UK’s first digitally enabled, citizen-centric town, using digital tools at every stage. By using data, services like waste management and energy use can continue to improve. This approach helps to prepare for better living conditions, today and tomorrow.

This summer, we’re sharing some of the technologies that can help to shape the future of our cities. Roofs play an important role in that!
Nearly 70% of the world’s population is set to live in cities by 2050. And while our cities keep getting busier and space is scarce, we often overlook and underuse an important space: the roof. Therefore, MVRDV NEXT created RoofScape – an open-source tool that can turn our empty rooftops into functional urban spaces.
The tool can visualise our cityscapes and assess our roofs across seven colour-coded categories, from housing to green spaces, and energy to transport. It provides site-tailored results, depending on the characteristics of a particular building and its proximity to existing services and infrastructure. It can help guide both policymakers and individuals to unlock the potential of their rooftops. Since we released the prototype of RoofScape, the team behind it has now joined MultiRoofs, a European project funded by Interreg North-West Europe to explore new ways to make cities more sustainable.
RoofScape was developed in collaboration with @build.superworld and @gemeenterotterdam.

Since we released the prototype of RoofScape, the team behind it has now joined MultiRoofs, a European project funded by Interreg North-West Europe to explore new ways to make cities more sustainable.
RoofScape was developed in collaboration with @build.superworld and @gemeenterotterdam.

This summer, we’re sharing some of the technologies that can help to shape the future of our cities. And we’re starting with… the sun! ☀️
Many cities – including our hometown of Rotterdam – face a housing crisis and need to expand their housing stock. But how can we densify our cities with high-rises without plunging our streets into shaded darkness?
That’s where SolarScape comes in! This tool – developed by MVRDV NEXT – assesses the impact of new, tall buildings on daylight exposure. It uses a 3D grid-based model of the city and daylight simulations, visualising the effects of new buildings on the amount of shade and sunlight exposure.
SolarScape can intelligently calculate the possibilities of densification while keep enough “sun spots”, in line with recent Rotterdam policies on minimal daylight exposure. With these calculations, policy-makers can decide how to densify the city for more available housing, while also maximising street-level daylight. The tool can even provide suggestions for cooler, shaded areas for cities in warmer climates.

The Instagram Story Viewer is an easy tool that lets you secretly watch and save Instagram stories, videos, photos, or IGTV. With this service, you can download content and enjoy it offline whenever you like. If you find something interesting on Instagram that you’d like to check out later or want to view stories while staying anonymous, our Viewer is perfect for you. Anonstories offers an excellent solution for keeping your identity hidden. Instagram first launched the Stories feature in August 2023, which was quickly adopted by other platforms due to its engaging, time-sensitive format. Stories let users share quick updates, whether photos, videos, or selfies, enhanced with text, emojis, or filters, and are visible for only 24 hours. This limited time frame creates high engagement compared to regular posts. In today’s world, Stories are one of the most popular ways to connect and communicate on social media. However, when you view a Story, the creator can see your name in their viewer list, which may be a privacy concern. What if you wish to browse Stories without being noticed? Here’s where Anonstories becomes useful. It allows you to watch public Instagram content without revealing your identity. Simply enter the username of the profile you’re curious about, and the tool will display their latest Stories. Features of Anonstories Viewer: - Anonymous Browsing: Watch Stories without showing up on the viewer list. - No Account Needed: View public content without signing up for an Instagram account. - Content Download: Save any Stories content directly to your device for offline use. - View Highlights: Access Instagram Highlights, even beyond the 24-hour window. - Repost Monitoring: Track the reposts or engagement levels on Stories for personal profiles. Limitations: - This tool works only with public accounts; private accounts remain inaccessible. Benefits: - Privacy-Friendly: Watch any Instagram content without being noticed. - Simple and Easy: No app installation or registration required. - Exclusive Tools: Download and manage content in ways Instagram doesn’t offer.
