👉🏾“Nonconformity is creative when it is controlled and directed by a transformed life and is constructive when it embraces a new mental outlook.“

👉🏾“This hour in history needs a dedicated circle of transformed nonconformists. Our planet teeters on the brink of atomic annihilation; dangerous passions of pride, hatred, and selfishness are enthroned in our lives; truth lies prostrate on the rugged hills of nameless calvaries; and men do reverence before false gods of nationalism and materialism. The saving of our world from pending doom will come, not through the complacent adjustment of the conforming majority, but through the creative maladjustment of a nonconforming minority.”

Yesterday, in his first encyclical, “Magnifica Humanitas” (Magnificent Humanity), Pope Leo XIV made a historic apology for the Holy See’s role in legitimizing slavery and for having failed to condemn it for centuries, calling the Vatican’s record a “wound in Christian memory.”

Acknowledgement, apology, repentance, repair, and justice (realignment with love) are among the key components of authentic reconciliation, which is the 6th step in Kingian Nonviolence.

May the leaders of all religious bodies, nations, and other entities who approved, facilitated, profited from and/or were apathetic regarding the vicious, inhuman trade and enslavement of African peoples to build empire sincerely commit to reconciliation.

We are grateful for his life and his work in the interest of justice and Civil Rights. Our hearts go out to his family and our prayers go up on behalf of his loved ones.

Don’t be overcome by racism and/or white supremacist ideology (which includes a distorted view of “law & order”). This will likely prevent you from seeing a video of a Black man being brutalized with a police officer’s knee to his neck for over 9 minutes and calling for his mama, and surmising that “he deserved it.”

The “he deserved it” proclaimers are very often those who celebrate violent insurrection, enslavement, and genocidal “discovery,” “founding,” and “settling.”

Do you remember where you were six years ago when you saw the video of Minneapolis Police Officer Derek Chauvin murdering George Floyd by kneeling on his neck in broad daylight for 9 minutes and 29 seconds?

George didn’t deserve that brutality from Chauvin or the cruelty of having his life and death mocked in social media and podcast commentary, and by comedians.

We remember George. We continue to work for a world that would never succumb to what Dr. King called “the white backlash” in response to the positive civic, organizational, and corporate efforts after George was murdered. Most of all, we are committed to cultivating a society in which both legislation and loyalty to humanity prevent police brutality.

Our hearts go out to George’s family and friends as they face this day.
