all my life i have heard that we are here on this earth  to love and to show compassion. and honestly, i have bridled at such instruction; because it asked me to show an act of love and compassion WITHOUT an action to use it against. in other words, showing love and being compassionate is not something i just walk around doing for no reason. i don't aggressively love people.

-just like- 

i don't aggressively hate people, either.  

in my opinion, love and compassion is a reaction to an act of aggression. it is a form of self-defense. a martial art. it is a weapon. love and compassion embolden me in times of crisēs. it is something i NEED in order to de-escalate a situation. during times of peace i don't need any of that. in times of peace i am at ease. i am calm. i am a light breeze among the leaves.
