AI can be useful, but it comes with a cost to the environment. Asking ChatGPT just a few questions uses an entire water bottle’s worth of water and nearly 10x the energy of a regular Google search. As the use of AI accelerates, it will use up more and more of the earth’s finite resources, including fresh water, and contribute to climate change.

Though corporations have an obligation to make AI more sustainable, individuals can do their part by using it only for essential tasks.

Fast fashion is killing the planet and harming people, including children. It’s responsible for 10% of global greenhouse emissions, more than air travel and maritime shipping combined. Less than 2% of garment workers make a living wage, with children as young as 11 working in factories.

Fast fashion also uses 215 trillion liters of water every year, and synthetic textiles are responsible for 35% of all microplastics in the ocean.

We need to rewear and repair the clothes we own, opt for secondhand rather than new, and support sustainable manufacturing practices.
